With visibility that can stretch for many metres and lagoons as calm as a swimming pool, Lakshadweep is one of India's finest places to snorkel. The reefs off Agatti, Kadmat and Bangaram teem with parrotfish, butterflyfish, clownfish and living coral, all just a short fin-kick from the beach. Sheltered water and gentle slopes make it wonderfully beginner-friendly, while stronger swimmers can drift over deeper reef edges. Three islands stand out. Agatti pairs the archipelago's only airport with a long, clear lagoon; Kadmat has a famously long lagoon and a dive centre; and Bangaram offers a vivid house reef in a resort setting. All three combine calm shallow water with easy shore access, so you're rarely far from good coral.
Basic snorkel gear — mask, snorkel and fins — is generally available through operators and dive centres, but keen snorkellers often bring their own mask for a reliable fit. Add reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard against the sun, and water shoes.
Lakshadweep's sheltered lagoons are ideal for first-timers — the water is calm, shallow and clear, and guides are on hand. Always snorkel with a buddy, stay within marked or advised areas, and check conditions before entering. If you're unsure, start with a glass-bottom boat ride to preview the reef.
Fly Kochi (COK) to Agatti (AGX), then boat between islands; other cities connect via Kochi. Remember that an entry permit is mandatory for every visitor — we help arrange it, subject to government approval, so apply about 15–30 days ahead with ID proof, photos and a police clearance certificate.
The October–May dry season delivers the calmest, clearest water, with December to April at its best. Avoid the June–September monsoon, when the sea turns rough, visibility drops and many boat transfers and water activities are suspended.
Lakshadweep's reefs are fragile and protected. Never touch, stand on or collect coral, keep a respectful distance from marine life, and use only reef-safe sunscreen. Responsible snorkelling keeps these coral gardens thriving for everyone who follows.
