The lagoons are the heart of any Lakshadweep holiday: broad sheets of shallow, glass-clear water in every shade of turquoise, sheltered from the open sea by living coral reefs. Because the water is calm and often waist-to-chest deep, the lagoons of Agatti, Kadmat, Kavaratti and Bangaram are perfect for gentle swimming, snorkelling and simply floating over coral. Marine life comes right up to the shallows, so you'll spot bright reef fish without ever leaving the sandbank. It is one of the most family-friendly ways to enjoy the sea in India.
Land at Agatti and settle in beside the lagoon. Spend the afternoon paddling in the shallows and watching the sunset.
Snorkel over the reef, join a glass-bottom boat ride and float in the calm, warm water of the main lagoon.
Transfer by boat to Kadmat or Bangaram for a change of lagoon, more snorkelling and a quieter stretch of sand.

Each inhabited island sits inside its own coral atoll, so a shallow lagoon wraps the shore before the reef drops into deep ocean. This natural barrier keeps the lagoon water calm, warm and crystal clear, giving those signature turquoise and jade colours. The result is a safe, sheltered playground quite unlike an open beach.
Because much of the lagoon is shallow and gentle, it's wonderful for relaxed swimming and beginner snorkelling. Slip on a mask and you'll drift over coral heads busy with clownfish, parrotfish and sea cucumbers. Life jackets and guides are available, making it comfortable even for nervous swimmers and children.
Agatti greets you with a stunning lagoon on arrival, while Kadmat is prized for its exceptionally long, calm one. Kavaratti pairs its lagoon with water sports and a marine aquarium, and Bangaram and Thinnakara offer quieter, resort-style lagoons well suited to honeymooners.
The lagoons are at their clearest and calmest from October to May, with peak conditions December to April. During the June–September monsoon the sea is rough and many boat transfers between islands are suspended, so plan for the dry season for the postcard-blue water.
