Hemis is the largest and richest monastery in Ladakh, tucked into a side valley south of Leh and belonging to the Drukpa lineage. Founded in the 17th century, it is famed for its vast copper Guru Padmasambhava statue, its museum of thangkas and relics, and the vivid masked dances of the Hemis festival. Our Hemis monastery tours combine it with nearby Thiksey and the Indus valley gompas. Trips start from around Rs 16,999, with the final quote shaped by your hotels, season and travel dates.

The heart of Drukpa Buddhism

Hidden in a fold of the mountains, Hemis feels wonderfully secluded, which is partly why it survived intact through turbulent centuries. As the spiritual centre of the Drukpa lineage in Ladakh, its halls are thick with the scent of butter lamps and the low hum of chanting. The atmosphere is deeply contemplative.

The Hemis Festival

Each summer the monastery erupts into colour for the Hemis festival, honouring Guru Padmasambhava. Monks in elaborate silk costumes and fierce masks perform cham dances in the courtyard while crowds gather from across the region. Once every twelve years a giant thangka is unveiled, a rare and moving sight.

How to reach Hemis

Hemis lies roughly 45 kilometres south of Leh, up a short side valley off the Indus road. It is an easy half-day drive that pairs naturally with Thiksey and other valley monasteries. We provide a private vehicle and can arrange a knowledgeable local guide.

Best time to visit

The monastery is accessible from May to September when Ladakh's roads are open and the weather is mild. If you wish to catch the Hemis festival, tell us your dates early as they follow the Tibetan lunar calendar. Days are pleasant while nights stay cold.

Visiting respectfully

Hemis is a living monastery, so modest dress and quiet behaviour are appreciated inside the prayer halls. Photography may be restricted in certain shrines, and it is polite to ask before photographing monks. We brief every guest on the simple etiquette beforehand.
