The best time to visit Ladakh is from May to September, when the high passes are clear of snow, the roads to Nubra and Pangong are open and the weather is bright and dry. This rain-shadow region sees little monsoon, so summer skies stay crisp while the rest of India is soaked. Winter is starkly beautiful but bitterly cold, with many routes and lakes frozen or closed. Below we break down each part of the season so you can pick the timing that suits you best, and remember that acclimatising to the altitude matters whenever you travel.
Whatever the month, begin with a rest day in Leh to adjust to the altitude before any high drives.
Gentle outings to Leh's monasteries and viewpoints let your body settle while you take in the town.
Once acclimatised, cross Khardung La into the Nubra Valley for the cold-desert dunes.
Drive to Pangong Tso, at its most colourful under clear summer light. Overnight by the lake.
Head back over Chang La, timing your visit within the May-to-September window for open passes.

Aim for May to September. This is when the passes are open, the lakes are unfrozen and the weather is settled enough for the full Leh-Nubra-Pangong circuit. Outside these months, snow and cold close many roads and make travel far harder.

Ladakh is a high-altitude cold desert, so days can be warm in summer while nights stay chilly year-round. It lies in the Himalayan rain shadow and sees little monsoon, keeping summer skies bright and dry. Always pack warm layers, as temperatures drop sharply after sunset even in July.
Winter, from November to March, transforms Ladakh into a frozen wonderland but is only for the hardy. Many passes and roads close, and temperatures plunge well below freezing. It's the season for the specialist Chadar frozen-river trek and snow-leopard spotting, both demanding dedicated, cold-weather trips.
