Thiksey rewards those who arrive at dawn. As the sun lifts over the Indus valley, monks summon the community to prayer with long horns from the rooftop, and the halls fill with chanting and the flicker of butter lamps. It is one of the most moving experiences in Ladakh, and well worth setting an early alarm.
The monastery's centrepiece is a magnificent Maitreya Buddha, rising two storeys through a purpose-built chamber. Completed in the 1980s to mark a Dalai Lama visit, its calm gilded face and lotus throne draw a steady stream of admirers. The surrounding murals repay slow, careful looking.
Thiksey sits about 19 kilometres from Leh on the road towards Hemis, making it one of the easiest monasteries to visit. Its low elevation and short drive suit your acclimatisation days perfectly. We provide a private vehicle and can arrange a local guide to explain the art.
May to September brings the most reliable weather and open roads, though the monastery welcomes visitors much of the year. For the dawn prayers, aim to arrive before the ceremony begins in the early morning. Days are mild while nights turn cold.
