Lamayuru's origins reach back over a thousand years, and legend holds that the valley was once a lake drained by a sage to found the monastery. Whatever the truth, few places in Ladakh feel so steeped in age and myth. The prayer halls hold weathered murals and statues that reward a slow, attentive visit.
Below the monastery, the hillsides dissolve into pale, wrinkled folds of sediment that look uncannily like the surface of the moon. Geologists explain it as ancient lakebed deposits, but standing among them feels wonderfully otherworldly. It is one of Ladakh's most distinctive and photogenic sights.
Lamayuru lies around 120 kilometres west of Leh on the Kargil road, a longer but scenic drive through the Sham valley. Many guests break the journey with stops at Magnetic Hill, the Sangam and Alchi. We provide a comfortable vehicle and an experienced mountain driver.
May to September offers the most reliable conditions, when the roads are clear and the weather is mild. The lower valley is gentler on the body than the high passes, making it comfortable earlier in a trip. Nights remain cold, so pack layers.
