Zanskar is one of the Himalaya's last great wildernesses, a deep river valley of towering gorges, isolated villages and cliff-clinging monasteries south of Leh. Long cut off for much of the year, it rewards adventurous travellers with raw scenery and a way of life little changed by time. Our Zanskar Valley tours take in Padum, ancient Karsha and Phugtal gompas, and the dramatic drive in. Trips start from around Rs 16,999, with longer itineraries recommended and the final quote shaped by your hotels, season and travel dates.

A true Himalayan frontier

Zanskar remains one of the most remote inhabited valleys in India, ringed by high passes that snow shuts for much of the year. That isolation has preserved both its dramatic landscapes and its deeply traditional Buddhist culture. For travellers seeking wilderness over comfort, few places compare.

Monasteries clinging to cliffs

Zanskar's spiritual heart lies in its monasteries:

  • Karsha, the valley's largest gompa
  • Phugtal, dramatically built into a cliffside cave
  • Sani, among the oldest religious sites in the region
  • Stongdey, perched high above the valley floor

How to reach Zanskar

The main route runs from Leh to Kargil, then south along the Suru valley to Padum, a long journey over two or more days. Roads are rough and remote, so we plan generous timings and reliable vehicles. This is a trip for those happy to trade comfort for adventure.

Best time to visit

Zanskar is only reliably accessible from around June to September, once the passes clear of snow. Even then conditions can be rugged, so flexibility is key. The famous frozen Chadar trek is a specialist winter activity requiring separate, expert arrangements.

Planning a longer trip

Because of the distances and rough roads, we recommend a longer itinerary for Zanskar rather than a rushed visit. Extra days let you reach Phugtal, linger in villages and travel at a safe, sustainable pace. Share your interests and time frame and we will build a fitting plan.
