Kargil is far more than a stopover on the Srinagar-Leh highway. It rewards travellers with the emerald Suru Valley, the sobering Drass war memorial and a rare blend of Balti, Dard and Ladakhi cultures. Its lower altitude also makes it a gentler introduction to the high mountains before you push on to Leh.

Kargil is reached by road, either from Srinagar over the Zoji La pass (around 200km) or from Leh via the Fotu La and Namika La passes. The nearest airports are Srinagar and Leh. Most travellers fold Kargil into a wider Ladakh road trip, and we arrange comfortable vehicles with experienced mountain drivers.
Kargil is best from May to September, when the passes are open and the Suru Valley is at its greenest. Summer days are pleasant while nights stay cool. Winters are severe and the Zoji La often closes, so we plan winter travel with care.
