Ladakh's stark, high-altitude wilderness is home to some of the Himalayas' most sought-after wildlife, from herds of kiang wild ass on the plains to marmots basking near the passes. Our wildlife tours take you to the valleys, lakes and grasslands where sightings are most likely, at a pace that respects both the animals and the altitude. Around the wetlands you may spot black-necked cranes and bar-headed geese, while patient travellers scan the high ridges for blue sheep and their elusive predators. Summer, from May to September, is the accessible season for the classic circuits and open passes.

Wildlife of the high desert

Ladakh sits in a cold, high-altitude ecosystem quite unlike anywhere else in India, and its wildlife is adapted to survive it. We guide you to the plains, wetlands and ridges where kiang, marmots, blue sheep and rare birds are most often seen. Patience and quiet observation are the keys to a rewarding tour.

What you might see

Summer sightings can include:

  • Kiang (Tibetan wild ass) on the plains
  • Himalayan marmots near the passes
  • Black-necked cranes and bar-headed geese at the lakes
  • Blue sheep on the high slopes

The famed snow leopard is chiefly a winter subject, requiring a specialist trip.

How to reach

Fly into Leh and rest on arrival to acclimatise before heading to the higher wildlife areas. Tours then move out towards the lakes and grasslands where sightings are best. We arrange the inner-line permits needed for restricted zones.

Best time & weather

May to September is the accessible summer season, when the passes are open and the plains are alive with resident and migratory species. This is ideal for kiang, marmots and waterbirds. Winter offers the rare chance of snow leopard but demands a dedicated, cold-weather expedition.

Responsible viewing

We keep a respectful distance from all wildlife and never disturb nests or dens, following the guidance of local reserves. Bring binoculars and a long lens for the best experience, plus warm layers for early starts. As with any Ladakh trip, acclimatise properly and stay hydrated at altitude.
