Colombo is Sri Lanka's vibrant capital and the gateway to the island, a city where colonial arcades, gleaming temples and a breezy seafront sit side by side. Most visitors land here at Colombo (CMB) and many linger a day or two for its markets, temples and sunset promenade. Highlights include the ornate Gangaramaya Temple and the wide-open Galle Face Green beside the Indian Ocean. Holiday Vibez builds Colombo into your itinerary as a relaxed start or finish to a Sri Lanka tour.

Why visit Colombo

Colombo is more than an arrival point — it is a lively, walkable capital of temples, colonial architecture and a fine ocean-front. A day or two here eases you into island time and offers some of the country's best dining and shopping.

Where to go in Colombo

Base yourself between the Fort and Galle Face areas for easy access to:

  • Gangaramaya Temple
  • Galle Face Green promenade
  • Pettah's bustling bazaars
  • The Old Dutch Hospital dining precinct

How to reach

Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) receives direct flights from many Indian metros, typically one to three and a half hours away. The city centre is a short transfer, and your private car and driver can continue the tour from here.

Best time to visit

Colombo sits on the west coast, so it is at its most pleasant December to March when skies are clearer and the sea calmer. The city is enjoyable year-round, with occasional afternoon showers during the mid-year monsoon.

Visa (ETA)

Indian travellers need an online ETA before arriving in Colombo. It is usually quick to obtain, and Holiday Vibez assists you with the application.

Food & travel tips

Try rice and curry, hoppers and fresh seafood, and don't leave without a cup of Ceylon tea. Dress modestly at temples, remove shoes and hats before entering, and stick to bottled water.
