The Cultural Triangle is the historic heart of the island.
Yala National Park holds one of the world's highest leopard densities, and jeep safaris also turn up elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and abundant birds. Early morning and late afternoon drives offer the best sightings. Udawalawe is a fine alternative for assured elephants.
For this loop, December to March is the driest and sunniest across the west, south and hills. Fly into Colombo (CMB) on a direct flight from an Indian metro; a private car and driver, plus the scenic train, covers the route.
