The Ideal Sri Lanka Itinerary: Sample Plan
One island, every landscape — mapped into an easy, well-paced route.
The joy of Sri Lanka is how much you can see in a single week. Because the island is compact, you can pair leopard safaris, tea-covered hills, an ancient rock fortress and palm-fringed beaches without long, tiring drives. Below is a sample six-to-seven day itinerary that flows logically from the Cultural Triangle down to the coast. Treat it as a starting point — we tailor every day to your pace and interests.

Land at CMB, meet your driver and overnight near the coast to shake off the journey.
Head to the Cultural Triangle to climb Sigiriya and admire the Dambulla Cave Temple murals.
Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and take in a lakeside cultural dance performance.
Ride the famous train to Ella, stopping for tea tasting and the Nine Arch Bridge.
Enjoy a jeep safari at Udawalawe or Yala, then drive to a south-coast beach base.
Explore the Galle Dutch fort and relax at Mirissa or Unawatuna, optional whale watching in season.
A final beach morning before your transfer to Colombo for the flight home.

Why this route works
The plan runs geographically from north to south, so you rarely retrace your steps. You gain altitude gradually into the cool hills, then descend to warm beaches for a relaxed finish. It balances active days — climbing, safaris, train rides — with slower coastal time.
Where to go
This itinerary threads together Sri Lanka's four signature regions:
- The Cultural Triangle: Sigiriya, Dambulla and the ancient cities
- Kandy and the hill country: tea estates, Nuwara Eliya and Ella
- Wildlife parks: Yala and Udawalawe safaris
- The south and west coast beaches around Galle
Best time to travel
For this west-and-south-focused route, December to March offers the driest weather across Colombo, Kandy, the hills and the south coast. If you'd rather explore the east coast around Trincomalee, May to September suits better. We time your regions to the season for the best conditions.
How long do you need?
Six to seven days covers the classic circuit comfortably. With five days you might drop either the far safari or a beach stretch; with eight-plus you can add the east coast, Anuradhapura or extra beach time. We stretch or trim the plan to fit your holiday.
Getting there & the ETA
You'll fly into Colombo (CMB), reached by direct flights from several Indian metros in about one to three-and-a-half hours. Indian passport holders need a Sri Lanka ETA e-visa, applied for online and quick to obtain — Holiday Vibez assists with the process.

Real stories from real journeys
Thousands of families and couples across South India have travelled with us — here's what a few of them had to say.
Travelling with my parents and two kids, I was nervous. Holiday Vibez planned every single day perfectly, and the Alleppey houseboat was the highlight. We are already planning our next trip with them.
Best price I found anywhere, and the desert safari and Burj Khalifa tickets were all sorted before we even landed. The team was on WhatsApp whenever I had a question.
The Gulmarg gondola, the shikara ride on Dal Lake — exactly like the photos, no surprises at all. By the end of the trip our driver felt like family.
Booked a fairly last-minute Phuket trip and they still got me a great deal with visa help included. Honest, smooth and genuinely helpful people.
Scuba at Havelock was a dream come true. Every transfer and every hotel was exactly as promised. Worth every rupee, and I have already recommended them to friends.
