Few destinations pack in as much variety as Sri Lanka. In a single trip you can climb an ancient rock fortress, sip tea in cool green hills, ride a legendary train, watch whales off the south coast and track leopards on safari. This compact island puts beaches, wildlife, temples and colonial towns within a few hours of each other. Here are the experiences we think no first-timer should miss.

Wildlife & safaris

Sri Lanka is one of the best places in Asia to see big wildlife. Yala boasts a famous leopard density, while Udawalawe is renowned for its wild elephant herds. Add whale watching off Mirissa in season and you have a genuine safari-and-ocean combination in one short trip.

Hill country & tea

The central highlands are cool, green and endlessly scenic. Visit a working tea estate near Nuwara Eliya — nicknamed 'Little England' — walk Little Adam's Peak above Ella, and ride the train that threads it all together. It's the most restorative stretch of any Sri Lanka itinerary.

Culture & ancient cities

History lovers are spoilt for choice:

  • Sigiriya Rock Fortress and its royal water gardens
  • The golden Buddhas of Dambulla Cave Temple
  • The ruined ancient capitals of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa
  • Kandy's Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic

Beaches & coast

When you're ready to slow down, the coast delivers. Bentota and Unawatuna are easy-going and family-friendly, Mirissa pairs beaches with whale watching, and Galle adds colonial charm. On the east coast, Trincomalee and Nilaveli shine from May to September.

Best time & getting there

The west and south coasts plus the hills are best from December to March, while the east coast peaks from May to September. You fly into Colombo (CMB) on direct flights from several Indian metros in about one to three-and-a-half hours. Indian travellers need an ETA e-visa, applied online — we assist.
