Nuwara Eliya is the heart of Sri Lanka's tea country, a cool highland town nicknamed 'Little England' for its colonial bungalows, rose gardens and racecourse. At over 1,800 metres, it is wrapped in emerald tea estates, misty valleys and crisp mountain air — a refreshing contrast to the coast. Visitors tour working tea factories, wander the manicured Victoria Park and boat on Gregory Lake. Holiday Vibez sets Nuwara Eliya in your hill-country leg, reached by the celebrated tea-country train.

Why visit Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya offers cool air, colonial charm and endless tea gardens — a serene highland retreat unlike anywhere else on the island. It is the classic place to learn about Ceylon tea and to slow down amid mountain scenery.

What to see and do

Highlights of the tea capital include:

  • A working tea estate and factory tour
  • Gregory Lake boat rides
  • Victoria Park and colonial 'Little England' streets
  • A day hike at Horton Plains to World's End

How to reach

The most memorable way to arrive is the scenic hill-country train from Kandy, winding through tea gardens and tunnels. By road it is a few hours of switchbacks by private car and driver from Kandy.

Best time to visit

The hill country is at its best December to March, with clearer skies for tea-estate walks and hikes. Evenings are chilly year-round, so pack a warm layer whatever the season.

Visa (ETA)

Indian passport holders need an online ETA before travel. It is usually quick to obtain, and Holiday Vibez assists you with the application.

Travel tips

Nights are cold at altitude, so bring warm clothing. Horton Plains hikes start very early to beat the mist, so plan an early night. Sample the estate-fresh Ceylon tea straight from the factory.
