The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is the beating heart of Sri Lankan Buddhism and a place of deep devotion. Even for non-Buddhists, the atmosphere of prayer, drumming and offering, set within a golden-roofed complex by the lake, is genuinely moving.
The relic chamber is honoured with puja ceremonies several times a day, marked by drumming and lines of pilgrims bearing lotus flowers. As an active shrine, modest dress is required, covering shoulders and knees, and shoes and hats are removed before entering.
