Kandy is Sri Lanka's cultural capital, the last stronghold of the island's kings, cradled by green hills around a peaceful lake. Its crowning glory is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the country's holiest Buddhist shrine. Evenings bring the drums and fire of traditional Kandyan dance, while the surrounding hills hide botanical gardens and spice trails. Holiday Vibez places Kandy at the heart of your Sri Lanka itinerary, on the way up to the tea country.

Why visit Kandy

Kandy blends deep spiritual significance with cool hill-country air. As the guardian of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the home of Kandyan dance, it is the beating cultural heart of Sri Lanka and a natural stop between Colombo and the tea hills.

What to see

Beyond the famous temple, Kandy rewards slow exploration:

  • The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
  • Kandy Lake at its centre
  • Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens
  • An evening of Kandyan cultural dance

How to reach

Kandy is around three to four hours by road from Colombo airport, or reachable by a scenic train. Most travellers arrive by private car and driver, which allows easy stops at spice gardens along the way.

Best time to visit

Set in the hills, Kandy is pleasant much of the year but at its best December to March with clearer skies. The city is especially vivid during the Esala Perahera festival, when the relic is paraded with elephants and dancers.

Visa (ETA)

An online ETA is required for Indian passport holders before travel. It is generally quick to obtain, and Holiday Vibez assists with your application.

Temple etiquette

Dress modestly at the Temple of the Tooth — shoulders and knees covered — and remove shoes and hats before entering. Photography of yourself posing with Buddha images is discouraged, so follow your guide's cues.
