Galle is the jewel of Sri Lanka's south coast, a walled colonial town where cobbled streets, boutique cafes and a lighthouse sit inside a 17th-century Dutch fort. Beyond the ramparts stretch some of the island's finest beaches, from Unawatuna's curving bay to the surf breaks of Weligama. It is an easy, scenic drive from Colombo along the coastal highway. Holiday Vibez pairs Galle's history with south-coast beach time for a relaxed close to your island tour.

Why visit Galle

Galle offers a rare mix of history and beach in one place — a beautifully preserved Dutch fort ringed by the ocean, with golden bays just minutes away. It is one of the most atmospheric towns in South Asia and a highlight of any south-coast trip.

What to explore

Inside and around the fort you'll find:

  • The Dutch Fort and its ramparts
  • Galle Lighthouse
  • Boutique cafes, galleries and museums
  • Nearby beaches at Unawatuna and Jungle Beach

How to reach

Galle is a comfortable two to two-and-a-half-hour drive from Colombo along the southern coastal highway. Most visitors travel by private car and driver, stopping at beach towns en route.

Best time to visit

As a south-coast town, Galle is at its best December to March when the sea is calm and skies are clear — ideal for beaches and fort walks. This is also whale-watching season along the south coast.

Visa (ETA)

Indian passport holders need an online ETA before arrival. It is usually quick to obtain, and Holiday Vibez assists you with the process.

Travel tips

Explore the fort on foot in the cooler morning or evening. Carry water, sun protection and modest cover for any temple visits. Fresh seafood and Ceylon tea are the local treats to seek out.
