Polonnaruwa was Sri Lanka's second great royal capital, and today it is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in South Asia. Set in the heart of the Cultural Triangle, its palace ruins, temples and giant carved Buddhas sit within a peaceful archaeological park you can explore on foot or by bicycle. Holiday Vibez arranges Polonnaruwa as part of a wider island itinerary, pairing it easily with Sigiriya and Dambulla. Expect a rewarding half-day among the relics of a golden age.

Why visit Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa reached its peak in the 12th century under King Parakramabahu I and remains remarkably intact. Compact and walkable, it lets you take in palaces, temples and monumental Buddhas in a single relaxed visit, making it one of the most satisfying stops in the Cultural Triangle.

How to reach

Polonnaruwa sits in north-central Sri Lanka, roughly a few hours' drive from Colombo. The easiest way is a private car and driver, which most of our guests use to link Polonnaruwa with Sigiriya, Dambulla and Kandy on a flowing route.

Best time to visit

The Cultural Triangle is enjoyable for much of the year, though the driest months tend to fall between the coastal monsoons. Aim to explore the ruins early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and to catch softer light on the stone.

Visa (ETA)

Indian passport holders need a Sri Lanka ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization), applied for online before travel. Holiday Vibez will help you with the application as part of your booking, so the paperwork is one less thing to think about.

Travel tips

Polonnaruwa is best explored by bicycle, which most sites near the entrance can arrange.

  • Wear modest clothing and remove shoes and hats at religious monuments.
  • Carry water, sun protection and a hat.
  • Start early to enjoy the ruins in cooler air.
