Sigiriya, the Lion Rock, is Sri Lanka's most iconic sight and a UNESCO World Heritage marvel. Rising some 200 metres from the plains, this fifth-century rock fortress was crowned by a royal palace, reached by a staircase that once passed between the paws of a giant carved lion. On the way up you pass landscaped water gardens, ancient frescoes of celestial maidens and the mirror wall, before reaching summit ruins with breathtaking views. Holiday Vibez centres Cultural Triangle tours on this unforgettable climb.

Why climb Sigiriya

Sigiriya is a masterpiece of ancient engineering and one of Asia's great historical sights. Part fortress, part sky palace, it rewards the climb with exquisite frescoes, clever water gardens and a summit view that stretches for miles across the green plains.

The climb

The ascent involves around 1,200 steps and steel staircases along the rock face, taking most visitors a couple of hours to enjoy without rushing. It is best tackled early in the morning, before the heat builds, and we arrange your visit for the coolest, quietest window.

How to reach

Sigiriya lies in the Cultural Triangle in central Sri Lanka, a few hours' drive from Colombo. Most guests arrive by private car and driver, which makes it easy to combine with Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Kandy.

Best time to visit

Sigiriya can be climbed year round, but early morning is ideal to beat the heat and the crowds. The Cultural Triangle is generally driest between the coastal monsoons, so we time your climb to suit the conditions.

Visa (ETA)

Indian passport holders need a Sri Lanka ETA, applied for online before travel. Holiday Vibez assists with the application so the only climb on your mind is the rock itself.
