Anuradhapura is Sri Lanka's oldest royal capital, a vast ancient city and UNESCO World Heritage Site that flourished for over a thousand years. Its sprawling ruins are studded with colossal brick stupas, monastery remains and serene reservoirs, and it guards the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. It is the spiritual anchor of the Cultural Triangle. Holiday Vibez includes Anuradhapura for travellers drawn to Sri Lanka's ancient soul.

Why visit Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura is where Sri Lankan civilisation and Buddhism took root, a sacred city of monumental stupas and living pilgrimage. Its scale and serenity make it deeply moving — a place of history and quiet devotion rather than crowds.

What to see

The ancient city's key sights include:

  • The sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree
  • The Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya stupas
  • The Abhayagiri monastic complex
  • The Isurumuniya rock temple

How to reach

Anuradhapura lies in the north-central plains, around four to five hours by road from Colombo. Most visitors arrive by private car and driver, often as part of a Cultural Triangle loop.

Best time to visit

The dry-zone plains are best enjoyed in the cooler, drier spells around December to March and mid-year. Explore in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat as you move between sites.

Visa (ETA)

Indian passport holders need an online ETA before travel. It is usually quick to obtain, and Holiday Vibez assists you with the application.

Visiting tips

The sacred sites require modest dress with shoulders and knees covered, and shoes and hats removed at the stupas and Bodhi tree. The site is huge, so a bicycle or car helps; carry water and sun protection.
