The Chele La Pass is the highest motorable road in Bhutan, cresting at around 3,988m between the Paro and Haa valleys. Thousands of prayer flags flutter across the ridge, and on a clear day the sacred peak of Jomolhari and neighbouring Himalayan summits rise on the horizon. It is an exhilarating, easy-to-reach high point of any western Bhutan tour, with no trekking required. Chele La delivers big Himalayan drama with almost no effort — you simply drive to the top. The forest of prayer flags, the crisp alpine air and the possibility of Jomolhari on the skyline make it unforgettable. It is one of the easiest ways to reach a genuine high pass in the Himalayas.
Make the most of the summit:
The pass is a scenic drive of around one and a half to two hours from Paro town, climbing through pine and rhododendron forest. There is no airport nearby, so travellers fly into Paro International Airport and continue by road. It is often combined with the Haa valley or the Tiger's Nest.
Indian citizens do not need a traditional visa for Bhutan. You travel on a passport or Voter ID with an Entry Permit that Holiday Vibez arranges. The Sustainable Development Fee is currently ₹1,200 per person per night for Indian nationals, children discounted and under-6s exempt (subject to change). Carry passport photos for the paperwork.
March to May and September to November offer the clearest skies and the best chance of Himalayan views, with spring adding rhododendron blooms. The pass is high and cold, so warm layers are essential, and cloud or winter snow can limit visibility and access.
