Punakha's twin rivers, the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu, offer Bhutan's most enjoyable river rafting, gliding past terraced fields, suspension bridges and the majestic Punakha Dzong. Trips range from gentle floats to lively grade-two and grade-three sections, so both first-timers and keener paddlers find a fit. The warm, low-lying Punakha valley makes rafting possible across much of the year outside heavy monsoon flows. We arrange guided rafting with certified operators, transport from Thimphu, and your Bhutan entry permit.

Rafting in Punakha

Punakha is Bhutan's rafting capital, where the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu meet below the dzong. The Mo Chhu suits families and beginners with gentle grade-two water, while the Pho Chhu adds longer, punchier rapids for the adventurous.

Who can raft

Guided trips welcome first-timers and confident swimmers alike. Safety briefings, helmets and life jackets are standard, and guides tailor the run to your group. Children can usually join the gentler Mo Chhu float at operator discretion.

Best time to raft

Rafting is best in spring and autumn, when flows are moderate and skies clear. Heavy monsoon (June to August) can raise water levels and pause trips for safety, while winter runs are cooler but scenic.

Entry permit and documents

Indian nationals do not need a visa for Bhutan. You travel on an Entry Permit and pay the Sustainable Development Fee, currently ₹1,200 per person per night (subject to change; children discounted, under-6 exempt), carrying a passport or Voter ID. We arrange the entry permit within your package.

Travel tips

Punakha is warmer and lower than Thimphu, so dress lighter for rafting day.

  • Bring quick-dry clothes and secure footwear
  • Waterproof your camera or use a strap
  • Follow your guide's safety brief at all times
