Bumthang is the spiritual heartland of Bhutan, a cluster of four beautiful valleys in the country's centre dense with the oldest and holiest temples in the kingdom. Watched over by Jakar Dzong, it is a place of pilgrimage, legend and gentle rural beauty at around 2,600–2,800m. Reaching it means a rewarding overland journey through central Bhutan. Our tours weave in its finest monasteries, and we arrange your Entry Permit and Sustainable Development Fee.

Why visit Bumthang

Bumthang is Bhutan at its most sacred and serene. Its four valleys hold the kingdom's oldest temples and richest legends, and the landscape of buckwheat fields, apple orchards and pine slopes is quietly beautiful. It rewards travellers willing to journey deeper into the country.

Temples & things to do

Bumthang is a pilgrimage in itself:

  • Explore Jakar Dzong above the valley
  • Visit the ancient Jambay and Kurjey temples
  • Walk to the sacred Burning Lake
  • Sample local apple products and buckwheat dishes

How to reach Bumthang

Bumthang lies deep in central Bhutan, a long and scenic drive of roughly two days from Paro via Trongsa. Some travellers use domestic flights to Bathpalathang airstrip when available. Most reach it overland after flying into Paro International Airport, which is why Bumthang tours are best planned over a week or more.

Entry permit & documents

Indian citizens do not need a traditional visa for Bhutan. You travel on a passport or Voter ID with an Entry Permit that we arrange, plus route permits for central Bhutan which our team handles. The Sustainable Development Fee is currently ₹1,200 per person per night for Indian nationals, children discounted and under-6s exempt (subject to change).

Best time to visit

Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, offer the best weather and access. Autumn also brings vibrant temple festivals such as the Jambay Lhakhang Drup. Winters are very cold at this altitude, and monsoon roads can slow the long overland drive.
