Wangdue Phodrang, usually shortened to Wangdue, sits on a ridge above the confluence of two rivers and marks the gateway between western and central Bhutan. Its landmark Wangdue Phodrang Dzong commands the valley, and the town is a natural stop en route to Phobjikha, Trongsa and Bumthang. At around 1,300m the area is warm and scenic, dotted with farms and river views. We arrange your Entry Permit and guide you on the Sustainable Development Fee.
Land at Paro where we complete your entry permit, then transfer to Thimphu for an evening at leisure.
Cross the Dochula Pass to Punakha, visit the dzong, then continue the short distance to Wangdue on its ridge.
Explore Wangdue Phodrang Dzong and the traditional village of Rinchengang, with sweeping river-confluence views.
Drive back over Dochula towards Paro, with photo stops, in time for your onward flight.

Wangdue blends a dramatic ridgetop dzong with a warm, easygoing valley setting. It is both a worthwhile stop in its own right and the essential gateway for anyone heading deeper into central Bhutan. The river confluence and traditional villages add real character to the visit.
Wangdue pairs neatly with Punakha:
Wangdue is a short drive beyond Punakha, around three to four hours from Thimphu over the Dochula Pass. There is no airport nearby, so travellers fly into Paro International Airport and reach Wangdue by road, often combined with Punakha in one trip.
Indian citizens do not need a traditional visa for Bhutan. You travel on a passport or Voter ID with an Entry Permit arranged by Holiday Vibez, plus route permits for travel beyond Thimphu which we handle. The Sustainable Development Fee is currently ₹1,200 per person per night for Indian nationals, children discounted and under-6s exempt (subject to change).
October to April is comfortable given the lower, warmer altitude, and spring brings blossom to the valley. If Wangdue is your springboard to Phobjikha for the cranes, aim for the November to February window. Summer can be humid with higher rivers.
