Bhutan is one of Asia's finest birding destinations, its unbroken forests sheltering more than 700 recorded species. Our guided Bhutan birding tour follows the western valleys to Phobjikha, winter home of the graceful black-necked crane, with unhurried days for hornbills, laughingthrushes, pheasants and sunbirds. The best birding window is November to March, when the cranes are in residence and the skies are clear. We arrange your Bhutan entry permit, transport and local naturalist so you can simply keep your binoculars ready.

Why bird Bhutan

With around 70% forest cover and a conservation-first constitution, Bhutan protects habitats that neighbouring regions have lost. Species range from lowland hornbills to high-altitude pheasants, and the flagship winter draw is the black-necked crane at Phobjikha. Our tours are paced for observation, not ticking, with an experienced local guide.

Best time for birding

The prime season is November to March, when black-necked cranes winter in Phobjikha and clear skies aid spotting. Spring (March to May) adds breeding activity and rhododendron colour, though the cranes will have departed by then.

Entry permit and documents

Indian nationals do not need a visa for Bhutan. You travel on an Entry Permit together with the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), currently ₹1,200 per person per night (subject to change; children discounted, under-6 exempt). Carry a valid passport or Voter ID and passport-size photos. Holiday Vibez arranges the entry permit as part of your package.

Where you'll stay

We use comfortable valley hotels and lodges in Paro, Thimphu and near Phobjikha, chosen for early access to birding sites. Rooms are warm and simple; Phobjikha nights are cold, so pack layers.

Birding tips

Bring binoculars, a warm hat and gloves for the cranes, and be ready for early starts.

  • Dawn is the most productive hour at most sites
  • View cranes only from designated hides and distances
  • Altitude at Dochula and Phobjikha means cooler, thinner air
