The Buddha Dordenma is one of Bhutan's most striking sights — a 51-metre gilded bronze Buddha seated on the Kuensel Phodrang hill above Thimphu, gazing serenely over the valley. Inside the statue are more than a hundred thousand smaller Buddha images, and the terrace offers a sweeping view of the capital. This tour pairs the great statue with Thimphu's dzongs, chortens and craft workshops for a well-rounded taste of Bhutan's west. Holiday Vibez arranges your Bhutan Entry Permit and a private guided experience.

About the Buddha Dordenma

Completed in the 2010s, the Buddha Dordenma fulfils old prophecies about a great statue bringing blessings to the region. At 51 metres it is among the largest Buddha statues in the world, and the surrounding Kuensel Phodrang nature park makes a peaceful place to pause above the busy capital.

Things to do in Thimphu

Combine the statue with the capital's other highlights:

  • Circle the ever-busy Memorial Chorten
  • See Tashichho Dzong by the river
  • Browse the weekend market and craft workshops
  • Enjoy valley views from Kuensel Phodrang

How to reach

Fly into Paro (PBH) and drive about an hour to Thimphu, from where the Buddha Dordenma is a short uphill drive. All transfers are by private vehicle with your guide.

Entry permit & documents

Indian citizens do not receive a traditional visa. You need an Entry Permit, which Holiday Vibez arranges, and travel on a valid Indian passport or Voter ID. The Sustainable Development Fee is currently about ₹1,200 per person per night for Indians (children discounted, under-6 exempt; subject to change).

Best time to visit

March–May and September–November bring the clearest skies for valley views from the statue. Winters are cold but quiet, while summer clouds can soften the panorama. Mornings are often the crispest.

Travel tips

Dress respectfully as this is a sacred site, carry water and sunscreen for the exposed hilltop, and allow time simply to sit and take in the view. Photography of the statue and valley is welcome from the terrace.
