The Thimphu–Paro–Punakha circuit is the classic introduction to Bhutan, taking in the three great valleys of the country's west over 5–7 days. You'll explore the relaxed capital Thimphu, the historic valley of Paro with its cliff-clinging Tiger's Nest, and the warm, lower Punakha valley with its riverside dzong. It is the ideal first trip for travellers who want the highlights without long drives. Holiday Vibez arranges your Bhutan Entry Permit and a private guided itinerary end to end.

Overview of the western triangle

Thimphu, Paro and Punakha sit within comfortable driving distance of each other and together showcase Bhutan's culture, architecture and landscapes. This circuit balances city, valley and mountain pass, making it the most popular route for first-time visitors and those short on time.

Top things to do

Highlights across the three valleys include:

  • Hiking to the Tiger's Nest monastery above Paro
  • Standing beneath the giant Buddha Dordenma in Thimphu
  • Exploring the riverside Punakha Dzong
  • Crossing the chorten-lined Dochula Pass

How to reach

Fly into Paro (PBH), the country's only international airport and a dramatic Himalayan landing. From there all travel is overland by private vehicle. Overland entry via Phuentsholing is an alternative for those combining Bhutan with a wider India route.

Entry permit & documents

Indian citizens do not require a traditional visa. You need an Entry Permit (which we arrange) and travel on a valid Indian passport or Voter ID. A Sustainable Development Fee applies, currently about ₹1,200 per person per night for Indians (children discounted, under-6 exempt; subject to change). Please carry recent passport-size photographs.

Best time & weather

The most reliable seasons are March–May, with rhododendron blooms, and September–November, with clear post-monsoon skies. Winters are cold but crisp and quiet; summers can bring rain and cloud that may obscure mountain views.

What's included

Packages typically cover your Entry Permit processing, private vehicle and licensed guide, accommodation and daily breakfast. The final quote varies by chosen hotels, season, flights and the number of SDF nights.
