The Veera Narayana Temple at Belavadi is a Hoysala-era Vaishnava shrine built around 1200 CE under King Veera Ballala II, with further work completed in the years that followed. It is a trikuta, or three-sanctum, temple: the central sanctum holds an image of Veeranarayana, a standing four-armed form of Vishnu roughly eight feet tall, and the two flanking sanctums hold Venugopala (Krishna with the flute) and Yoganarasimha in a seated, meditative posture. Its most distinctive feature is the very large pillared ranga-mandapa, about a hundred feet square, that links the three shrines — a hall of lathe-turned, bell-shaped pillars unusual in scale even among Hoysala buildings. Pilgrims and travellers come for a living Vishnu shrine that is also one of the better-preserved Hoysala monuments, and it is usually visited together with Belur and Halebidu. Tradition holds that the village was the Ekachakranagara of the Mahabharata, where Bhima killed the demon Bakasura.
October to February is the comfortable window — the monsoon has passed, the Malnad countryside is green and the days are mild for elders walking a stone-floored complex. Vaikuntha Ekadashi and Krishna Janmashtami draw local devotees, but Belavadi is a small village shrine and never sees the crush of a major pilgrim town; March to May turns hot and June to September brings heavy rain.
Belavadi is in Chikkamagaluru district, about 28-29 km from Chikmagalur town, roughly 10-11 km from Halebidu and about 40 km from Hassan, reached by road off NH 73 — most visitors come by car or taxi as part of a Belur-Halebidu circuit. The nearest usable railheads are Kadur (about 44 km) and Birur, with Hassan station also well connected. Mangaluru airport is around 170 km away; Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, is the more common arrival point at roughly 250 km by road.
This is a nationally protected Archaeological Survey of India monument that is still in worship, so ordinary temple decorum applies — footwear is left outside and modest dress is expected. The floors are old polished stone and can be slippery, and there is no lift or ramp for the inner hall; elders may want a supporting arm. There are no steep steps or trek. Please confirm puja and opening times with the temple before you travel, as they are not fixed year-round.

How much time should we keep for Belavadi if we are also doing Belur and Halebidu?
About 45 minutes to an hour is enough for an unhurried visit and a walk around the mandapa. Belavadi sits roughly 10 km from Halebidu, so it fits comfortably into the same day as Belur and Halebidu without an extra night.
Is Belavadi part of the UNESCO Hoysala World Heritage listing?
No. The 2023 UNESCO inscription of the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas covers Belur, Halebidu and Somanathapura. Belavadi is a protected monument of the Archaeological Survey of India but is not on that list.
Is the temple still used for worship, or is it only a monument?
It is both — worship continues at the shrines while the ASI looks after the structure. Ritual timings can vary, so check with the temple locally before planning your darshan around a particular hour.
