The Chamundeshwari Temple stands on top of Chamundi Hill, about 1,000 metres above sea level and roughly 13 km east of Mysuru city. The goddess here is Chamundeshwari, a fierce form of Shakti shown in the sanctum with eight arms, and the shrine is counted among the eighteen Shakta Peethas, known in that set as Krouncha Pitha. The original shrine goes back to Hoysala times in the 12th century, and the Wodeyars of Mysore took Chamundeshwari as their family deity — Krishnaraja Wadiyar III added the seven-tiered gopuram, about 40 metres tall, in 1827. On the old stone stairway up the hill stands the temple's other famous sight: a monolithic granite Nandi, roughly 16 feet high, installed in 1664 by Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar.
October to February is the easiest stretch — Mysuru is dry and pleasant then, and the hilltop is cool in the mornings. Navaratri, celebrated here as the Mysuru Dasara, is the temple's biggest occasion (usually September or October) and the Fridays of the Ashada month (roughly June-July) are the other great draw; both bring lakhs of devotees and the queues are genuinely punishing, so elders who want a quiet darshan should pick an ordinary weekday outside these periods and avoid weekends.
The practical airport is Kempegowda International at Bengaluru, about 160-180 km away by road; Mysuru's own Mandakalli airport is much closer to the city but has only a handful of flights. Mysuru Junction is the nearest railhead, roughly 13 km from the hilltop. A tarred ghat road runs all the way to the temple, and city buses, taxis and autos run up from Mysuru through the day.
There are two ways up: the motorable road right to the temple, or the historic flight of about a thousand stone steps laid in 1659, which many pilgrims climb barefoot and which passes the great Nandi roughly two-thirds of the way. The climb is long and steep and is not advisable for elders or anyone with knee or heart trouble — take the road. Modest, traditional dress is expected, as at any working South Indian temple. Confirm darshan timings with the temple before you travel, as they change on festival days.

Do we have to climb the 1,000 steps to reach the temple?
No. A motorable road goes right up Chamundi Hill to the temple, and buses, taxis and autos use it all day. The steps are a devotional choice, not the only way in. Many families drive up, take darshan, and then walk down partway to see the Nandi statue.
Can a tour operator arrange special or quick darshan for us?
No. The temple administration runs its own queues and any entry arrangements are entirely theirs to decide. We can help with your travel, stay and transport up the hill, but no agent can obtain, reserve or speed up darshan. Plan for a wait, especially on Fridays, weekends and festival days.
How much time should we keep for Chamundi Hill?
On a normal day two to three hours covers the drive up, darshan and a stop at the Nandi and the viewpoint over Mysuru. During Ashada Fridays or Dasara, keep most of the day aside — crowds are very heavy and traffic on the hill road slows to a crawl.
