Sringeri Sharada Peetham, on the bank of the Tunga river in Karnataka's Chikkamagaluru district, is the monastery that Adi Shankaracharya established as the first of his four cardinal peethams, with the other three at Dwaraka, Puri and Badri. The presiding deity is Sharadamba, the goddess of learning, worshipped as a form of Saraswati; tradition holds that Shankaracharya installed a sandalwood image here, later replaced by a gold one in the Vijayanagara period. Families come to seek her blessing for study and learning, for the vidyarambham of young children, and for the darshan and blessings of the Jagadguru of the matha. Beside the Sharadamba temple stands the stone Vidyashankara temple of 1338 CE, whose mandapa rests on twelve monolithic pillars carved with the twelve zodiac signs, aligned so that the morning sun strikes them in the order of the months.
October to February is the comfortable window, with cool Malnad weather roughly in the low twenties and the Tunga running full after the rains. Sharada Navaratri in September–October is the biggest occasion of the year, ending in the Vijayadashami procession, and the Vidyatirtha Rathotsava falls in the Kartika month around October–November — both bring very large crowds and long waits, so elders who want a quieter darshan should pick an ordinary week in December or January instead. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain; the hills are beautiful then but travel and walking are harder.
The nearest airport is Mangaluru International Airport, about 105–110 km away by road, roughly three hours through the Ghats. The nearest convenient railhead is Udupi, about 80 km, and Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru are the other usual rail approaches. Sringeri has no railway station of its own, so the last leg is always by road; KSRTC and private buses run from Bengaluru (about 330 km), Mangaluru, Udupi, Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru, and taxis are easy to arrange from Mangaluru or Udupi.
A traditional Indian dress code is enforced inside the temple premises, in effect since August 2024 and applying to both the Sharadamba temple and Guru Nivasa across the Tunga — dhoti with angavastram for men, and saree, salwar-kameez with dupatta or langa-davani for women. Visitors not in traditional attire are kept out of the sanctum and inner pradakshina and can view the deity only from outside. Pack accordingly before you travel, and confirm current darshan and puja timings with the temple directly, since they change with festival days.

Is Sringeri one of the Char Dham temples?
No. Sringeri is one of the four Amnaya Peethams — the monastic seats founded by Adi Shankaracharya — not one of the Char Dham pilgrimage temples in Uttarakhand or the Badrinath-Dwarka-Puri-Rameswaram set. Sringeri is the southern peetham and, by tradition, the first he established.
Can we do vidyarambham or aksharabhyasa for a child at Sringeri?
Yes, Sharadamba is the goddess of learning and families do bring young children here for their first lessons, commonly around Vijayadashami. Arrangements and sankalpa details are handled by the temple and matha office, so write to or call them well in advance to book — this is not something a travel agent can arrange or expedite.
How many days are enough for a Sringeri trip?
One full day covers the Sharadamba temple, the Vidyashankara temple and the Tunga riverbank where the sacred fish are fed. Two days lets you add Kigga, Sirimane falls and Horanadu, and most families combine Sringeri with Dharmasthala, Kollur Mookambika or Udupi over three to four days.
