Shri Varadvinayak is the Ganesha temple at Mahad village in Khalapur taluka of Raigad district, and it is one of the eight Ashtavinayak shrines of Maharashtra — the circuit of self-manifested Ganapati temples that Marathi families have travelled for generations. The murti is regarded as swayambhu, and tradition holds that it was recovered from the adjoining lake in 1690; the present temple is credited to Subhedar Ramji Mahadev Biwalkar around 1725. The idol faces east with the trunk turned to the left, and the sanctum keeps a Nandadeep, an oil lamp said to have burned without a break since 1892. What sets Mahad apart from the other seven Ashtavinayak shrines is that devotees are allowed to step into the garbhagriha itself and offer their own namaskar to the deity rather than viewing from outside.
October to February is the easiest stretch for elders — the Konkan-side humidity drops and the drive up from Khopoli is comfortable. Ganesh Chaturthi in Bhadrapada (August–September) and Magha Chaturthi / Ganesh Jayanti (January–February) are the two big observances here and both draw very heavy crowds, as do Angarki and Sankashti Chaturthi days; if you are travelling with older people or small children, pick an ordinary weekday instead. June to September brings genuinely heavy monsoon rain in this belt, which is beautiful to look at but hard on road travel.
Mahad village sits close to the Mumbai–Pune corridor. The nearest railhead is Khopoli on the Central Railway, roughly 6–7 km away, with Karjat about 25 km off and served by express trains; taxis and autos are available outside both stations. By road it is about 60–65 km from Mumbai and about 85 km from Pune via the expressway, with Lonavala roughly 21 km away, so most Ashtavinayak groups reach it as a half-day run from either city. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai is the usual arrival point at roughly 80–90 km; Pune airport is a comparable distance on the other side.
This is a small shrine — the sanctum is compact, and because devotees are permitted inside it, movement slows considerably on festival days and Chaturthis. There is no climb or trek involved, which makes it one of the gentler Ashtavinayak stops for elderly pilgrims. Dress modestly as at any Maharashtrian temple, and confirm darshan and aarti timings with the temple before you travel, as they are not fixed year-round.

Which number is Mahad Varadvinayak in the Ashtavinayak yatra?
Most traditional itineraries place Mahad as the seventh stop on the Ashtavinayak circuit, though the accepted practice is to begin and end at Moragaon (Morgaon). Different tour operators sequence the eight temples differently for driving convenience; the religious requirement is that all eight are covered and that you return to Morgaon to complete the yatra.
Can we actually touch the idol at Varadvinayak?
Mahad is the Ashtavinayak temple where devotees are traditionally allowed to enter the garbhagriha and offer worship directly before the murti. This is a practice the temple management maintains, and it can be restricted or regulated on crowded days at the trust's discretion — no visitor or agent can guarantee it in advance.
Can Varadvinayak be combined with the Pali Ballaleshwar temple in one day?
Yes. Pali Ballaleshwar is the other Raigad-district Ashtavinayak shrine and lies roughly 40–45 km from Mahad by road, so the two are commonly clubbed into a single day from Mumbai, Lonavala or Khopoli. Start early, since the remaining six temples are spread across Pune and Ahmednagar districts and usually need two more days.
