Girijatmaj at Lenyadri is one of the eight Ashtavinayak shrines of Ganesha in western Maharashtra, and the only one of the eight set high on a hill and housed inside a rock-cut cave. The shrine occupies the largest of the Lenyadri caves, a group of Buddhist excavations near Junnar dated to roughly the 1st to 3rd centuries CE, and the hall was originally a vihara, a dwelling for monks, later given over to Ganesha worship. The murti is not an installed idol but a figure carved into the rock wall itself, and it faces north, so devotees stand behind the image rather than in front of it. The name Girijatmaj means "son of Girija" (Parvati), and tradition holds that Parvati performed twelve years of austerities on this hill praying that Ganesha be born as her son.
October to February is the easiest window — dry, cool mornings that make the hill climb manageable for elders. Ganesh Chaturthi (August or September) and Ganesh Jayanti (Magha, January or February) are the two big festivals here and both draw very heavy crowds on a hill with a single stepped approach, so avoid those dates if you are travelling with older parents or small children. The monsoon, roughly June to September, turns the hillside green but leaves the steps wet and slippery.
Lenyadri sits about 5 km from Junnar town in Pune district. Pune International Airport (Lohegaon) is the nearest airport, roughly 100 km away, and Pune Junction is the practical railhead at a similar distance; Talegaon station on the Mumbai–Pune line is somewhat closer for those coming from Mumbai. By road it is about 95 to 100 km from Pune, roughly three hours via the Pune–Nashik highway through Narayangaon and Junnar, and around 175 km from Mumbai. From Junnar, autorickshaws and shared jeeps run to the foot of the hill. Most Ashtavinayak circuits pair Lenyadri with Ozar's Vighnahar temple, about 14 km away, on the same day.
This shrine involves a real climb — a long flight of stone steps cut up the hillside in several stages, typically taken in 20 to 40 minutes. Counts quoted for the steps differ between sources, so plan for roughly 300 and take it slowly. Palanquin (doli) bearers are usually available at the base for those who cannot walk up, but this is a private arrangement made on the spot. Carry water, and avoid the midday sun. There is no vehicle road to the shrine itself. As the shrine is inside a protected cave complex, photography rules inside the sanctum can differ from the rest of the site — confirm with the temple before you travel, along with darshan timings.

How many steps are there at Lenyadri, and can an elderly person manage it?
The stepped path runs up the hillside in several flights — different sources put the count at around 280 to 320, so plan for roughly 300. It is a genuine climb of about 20 to 40 minutes at an unhurried pace. The steps are broad and there are railings and shaded rest points along the way, so many elders do complete it with breaks. If walking is not possible, palanquin bearers usually wait at the base and carry pilgrims up for a negotiated fee. Go early in the morning when it is cool.
Why does the Ganesha idol at Girijatmaj face away from the devotees?
The murti is carved directly into the rock wall of the cave rather than installed as a separate idol, and it faces north — so worshippers standing in the hall are effectively behind the image. The figure is regarded as swayambhu, self-manifested, and its trunk turns to the left. This is one of the features that makes Lenyadri different from the other seven Ashtavinayak shrines.
Can Lenyadri be covered along with the other Ashtavinayak temples in one trip?
Yes. Lenyadri and Ozar, about 14 km apart, are almost always done together on the same day as part of the eight-temple Ashtavinayak circuit, which is usually completed over two to three days from Pune. Traditionally the yatra begins and ends at Morgaon. Because Lenyadri needs the extra climbing time, most itineraries schedule it for a morning.
