Chintamani Temple at Theur, about 25 km east of Pune, is one of the eight Ashtavinayak shrines of Maharashtra, counted fifth in the traditional circuit and among the largest of the eight. The deity here is Ganesha as Chintamani, "the remover of anxieties" — a swayambhu image showing only the elephant head, with a trunk turning to the left and jewelled eyes. Tradition, following the Mudgala Purana, holds that Ganesha recovered the wish-granting Chintamani gem for the sage Kapila at this spot, and that the sage asked to keep the god rather than the jewel. The temple was developed by the Ganapatya saint Morya Gosavi's line and expanded under Peshwa patronage, especially Madhavrao I, who built the wooden sabhamandap and spent his last days here; it stands near the meeting of the Mula-Mutha with the Bhima.
November to February is the easiest stretch for elders — dry, cool Deccan weather and comfortable road travel from Pune. Ganesh Chaturthi (August/September) and Maghi Ganesh Jayanti (January/February) are the temple's biggest festivals and are genuinely packed, with long waits and heavy traffic on the Theur road; if you are travelling with older family members, come on an ordinary weekday instead. June to September brings monsoon rain, which keeps the countryside green but makes the approach slower.
Pune International Airport (Lohegaon) is the nearest airport, roughly 30 km away. Pune Junction is the nearest major railhead, about 26 km from the temple; taxis and autos are available from both. By road, Theur lies about 25 km east of Pune in Haveli taluka, reached via the Pune–Solapur highway with a short turn-off to the village, and MSRTC and private buses run from Pune. Most pilgrims cover it as part of a two-day Ashtavinayak circuit by car.
Access is easy — the shrine is on level ground with no climb or long flight of steps, which suits elderly pilgrims. Dress modestly as at any Maharashtrian temple, and confirm darshan and aarti timings with the temple before you travel, as they change on festival days.

Which number is Theur in the Ashtavinayak yatra?
Chintamani of Theur is counted fifth in the traditional Ashtavinayak order. In practice many groups visit it second, right after Morgaon, because it is close to Pune and fits the driving route better. By custom the yatra is completed by returning to the shrine you started from, usually Morgaon.
Can a travel agent arrange special or VIP darshan here?
No. The temple trust runs its own darshan queue and no operator can reserve, skip or speed it up. Anyone promising special entry is not being honest with you. What a package can genuinely do is handle the car, the route order across all eight shrines, and stays.
Is Theur suitable for elderly pilgrims?
Yes. There is no trek or hill climb — the temple sits in the village on flat ground and the walk from the parking area is short. The main difficulty is crowd volume on Chaturthi and Sankashti days rather than the terrain.
Can the whole Ashtavinayak circuit be done in one trip?
Yes, the eight temples are usually covered in two days by road from Pune, with Theur, Morgaon, Siddhatek and Ranjangaon on one leg and Ozar, Lenyadri, Mahad and Pali on the other. Three days is more comfortable for families travelling with elders.
