Vaishno Devi is a cave shrine to the Mother Goddess set in the Trikuta hills above Katra in Jammu's Reasi district, at roughly 1,585 m. Inside the holy cave there is no carved idol — the goddess is worshipped in the form of three naturally formed rock outcrops called pindis, revered as Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. The shrine is counted among the Shakta pithas associated with the goddess Sati, and tradition holds that pilgrims are called by the Mata herself when their time comes. It is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India; the yatra is on foot up the hill from Katra, and many pilgrims complete it by also visiting the Bhairon Nath temple above the cave.
March to June and September to November are the most comfortable months, with pleasant days and a manageable climb; winter (December to February) is very cold at Bhawan and the track can be affected by snow or heavy rain. The two Navratri seasons — Chaitra Navratri (March–April) and Sharad Navratri (September–October) — bring the largest gatherings of the year, and the queues and the track are extremely crowded then. Families travelling with elders or small children are usually better off avoiding Navratri and long weekends.
The nearest airport is Jammu (Satwari) airport, roughly 45–50 km from Katra by road, about two hours by taxi or bus. The nearest railhead is Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station, in Katra town itself, with direct trains from Delhi and several southern and western cities; Jammu Tawi is the other major railhead. Katra is on the national highway and is well connected by taxi and bus from Jammu, Udhampur and Srinagar. From Katra the shrine itself is reached only on the hill track, about 12–13 km from the Banganga starting point.
This is a climb, not a temple you drive up to. The track from Banganga to the holy cave is about 12–13 km uphill and most pilgrims take five to seven hours on foot. Registration is compulsory — every pilgrim must obtain a Yatra Parchi and collect an RFID-based Yatra Access Card before starting; it is issued free by the Shrine Board, online or at its counters, and no one may begin the trek without it. Ponies, palkis, battery cars, the ropeway and helicopter services exist for those who cannot walk the whole way, but availability and operating status change, so confirm with the Shrine Board before you travel. Elderly pilgrims and anyone with heart or breathing trouble should take medical advice first.

How long does the Vaishno Devi trek take, and can elderly parents manage it?
The 12–13 km climb from Banganga to the holy cave takes most people five to seven hours one way, and the return adds more. Elders who cannot walk that far generally use ponies, palkis, battery-operated vehicles or the helicopter service to Sanjhichhat, from where a shorter walk remains. Plan an overnight halt in Katra before and after, and get a doctor's clearance if there is any heart or knee trouble.
Do I need to register before starting the yatra?
Yes. The Shrine Board requires every pilgrim to have a Yatra Parchi and an RFID-based Yatra Access Card, issued free online or at counters in Jammu and Katra. No travel company can substitute for this, and no one can arrange faster or special darshan — the Shrine Board runs its own queues for everyone alike.
What is the best month to visit with family?
March to June and September to November are the easiest for weather and for the climb. Avoid the two Navratri periods if crowds are a concern, and expect cold and possible snow at Bhawan between December and February. Darshan arrangements and helicopter or ropeway timings can change, so confirm with the temple before you travel.
