The Shankaracharya Temple, also known by its older name Jyeshteshwara, is a Shiva temple standing on a spur of the Zabarwan range about 300 m above the floor of the Kashmir valley, looking down over Srinagar and the Dal Lake. The sanctum holds a lingam encircled by a stone serpent, set inside a small square shrine raised on a high octagonal base — a plain, heavy stone form quite unlike temple architecture further south. Its age is genuinely disputed: Kalhana's Rajatarangini credits King Gopaditya with a shrine on this hill in the centuries BCE, while later scholars date the present superstructure much later on older foundations. The name comes from a tradition Kashmiri Pandits hold strongly, that Adi Shankara stayed on this hill and composed the Saundarya Lahari here; the temple is today looked after by the Dharmarth Trust.
April to October is the comfortable window, when Srinagar is mild and the hill road and steps are dry and clear. Maha Shivaratri — called Herath in Kashmir — is the temple's biggest day and draws Kashmiri Pandit families from across India, but it falls in February or March when the valley is bitterly cold and snow can affect the approach road; elderly pilgrims are usually better served by a spring or autumn visit. July and August bring the heaviest general tourist traffic to Srinagar, so mornings are calmer at the temple.
Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport, Srinagar, is the nearest airport, roughly 17–19 km from the temple by road. Srinagar now has a railway station at Nowgam, about 15 km away, connected to Katra and Jammu since the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla line was completed in 2025; Jammu Tawi remains the long-distance railhead for most trains, around 270 km away by road. From Srinagar city, a metalled road branches off Boulevard Road near Gagribal and climbs the hill — about 11 km from the city centre, roughly half an hour by taxi. Vehicles stop at a parking point near the top, from where about 240 stone steps lead up to the sanctum.
Two things to plan for. First, the final approach is a flight of roughly 240 stone steps from the vehicle point to the sanctum — usually 15–20 minutes at an easy pace, with handrails, but it is a real climb for anyone with knee or heart trouble, and there is no lift or palanquin service. Second, this is a security-managed hill: there is a checkpoint on the way up where identity documents are checked and bags screened, and mobile phones and cameras are routinely required to be deposited before you go further. Rules can change at short notice depending on conditions in the valley, so confirm the day's position locally before you set out, and check timings with the temple before you travel.

How many steps are there at Shankaracharya Temple, and can elderly people manage the climb?
About 240 stone steps from the parking area at the top of the hill road to the sanctum. Most reasonably fit people take 15 to 20 minutes with rests. The steps are broad and have railings, but there is no lift, ramp or carrying service, so anyone with serious knee, breathing or cardiac problems should think carefully. The road itself takes you almost all the way up, so the climb is the only physically demanding part.
Can I take my phone or camera inside the temple?
Plan on not being able to. Visitors are generally asked to deposit mobile phones, cameras and other electronics at the security checkpoint on the way up, and enforcement varies with the security situation. Carry as little as possible and keep an ID card with you, since identity checks are normal here.
Is the temple open through winter, and what happens on Maha Shivaratri?
It functions year-round, but heavy snow can make the hill road difficult in deep winter and access is sometimes curtailed at short notice for weather or security reasons. Maha Shivaratri, observed in Kashmir as Herath, is the main festival and brings large crowds of Kashmiri Pandit devotees. Check the current position with the temple or local authorities before committing to a winter date.
