Avantipur, or Awantipora, holds the stone remains of two ninth-century Kashmiri temples raised by King Avantivarman, founder of the Utpala dynasty, who ruled the valley from 855 to 883 CE and made this town his capital. The larger and better-known of the two, Avantisvamin, was dedicated to Vishnu; the second, Avantisvara, to Shiva. What survives at the Avantisvamin site is a raised stone platform carrying the central shrine in a wide rectangular courtyard with four corner shrines, ringed by a colonnaded enclosure of cells, and approached through a massive carved gateway — the fluted columns and relief panels are among the clearest surviving examples of ninth-century Kashmiri temple carving. The temples were destroyed centuries ago and excavated in the early twentieth century; today they are protected monuments under the Archaeological Survey of India, visited for their history and architecture rather than for worship. Local people have long called the ruins Pandav Lari, the house of the Pandavas.
April to October, when the Kashmir valley is mild and the road from Srinagar is comfortable for elders; May–June and September are the easiest for walking the open stone site. Winter, roughly December to February, brings snow, ice on the platform and short daylight. There is no temple festival calendar here, since the site is an archaeological monument and not a functioning shrine, so crowds follow the general Kashmir tourist season rather than any festival day.
Awantipora sits on NH-44 between Srinagar and Anantnag, on the bank of the Jhelum, and the ruins are right beside the highway. Srinagar International Airport is the nearest airport, roughly 30–40 km away by road depending on the route, about an hour's drive. Awantipora has its own railway station on the Kashmir valley line, a few kilometres from the site, and Srinagar station is about 25–30 km. Most families visit it as a halt on the Srinagar–Pahalgam or Srinagar–Anantnag drive; any taxi on that route can stop here.
This is a ruin, not a living temple — there is no idol in place, no puja and no darshan, and the Archaeological Survey of India charges a small entry ticket at the gate. Visitors walk on uneven, weathered stone with steps up to the main platform and very little shade, so elders should wear firm footwear and carry water. Confirm opening days and any site restrictions with the ASI office or your driver before travelling.

Can we do puja or darshan at Avantipur temple?
No. The Avantisvamin and Avantisvara temples were destroyed long ago and only the stone structures remain. They are protected monuments cared for by the Archaeological Survey of India, so people visit to see the carvings and the layout, not to offer worship. Pilgrims travelling in Kashmir usually pair this stop with living shrines such as Shankaracharya or Kheer Bhawani.

Most visitors spend about 45 minutes to an hour walking the courtyard and the gateway. It is manageable for most elders, but the ground is uneven ancient stone and there are steps onto the raised platform, with little shade — go in the morning or late afternoon and take it slowly.
Is Avantipur safe and easy to include in a Kashmir itinerary?
It lies directly on the Srinagar–Anantnag national highway, so it is a natural halt on the way to or from Pahalgam and needs no detour. As with any travel in the region, check current local advisories and road conditions with your operator close to your travel dates.
