The Amarnath Cave Shrine is a natural limestone cave about 40 metres high, set at roughly 3,888 m (12,756 ft) in the Himalayas of Anantnag district, Jammu & Kashmir. Inside it, water dripping from the roof freezes each summer into a tall ice stalagmite that devotees worship as a self-formed lingam of Shiva, affectionately called Baba Barfani; two smaller ice formations beside it are held to represent Parvati and Ganesha. Tradition holds that it was here that Shiva narrated the Amar Katha, the secret of immortality, to Parvati. The site is old in the record as well as in belief, appearing as Amareshvara in the Nilamata Purana and in Kalhana's twelfth-century Rajatarangini, and the pilgrimage is today organised by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board.
The shrine is reachable only during the official yatra season, a stretch of roughly 45 days between late June and August that the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board announces afresh each year; there is no visiting it outside those dates. The ice lingam is at its fullest in Shraavana, and the yatra closes on Shravan Purnima (Raksha Bandhan), the day of Shravani Mela, which is also the most crowded. Early in the season the weather is harsher but the ice formation is usually better; by late July and August the lingam has often melted considerably, and in some years almost entirely. Expect very heavy pilgrim numbers throughout, and expect the route to be halted for a day or more when it rains.
The nearest airport is Srinagar International Airport, about 90-100 km from Pahalgam and roughly 95 km from Baltal by road. The usual railhead is Jammu Tawi, about 230-235 km from Pahalgam by road via the Jammu-Srinagar highway. From there the trek begins at one of two base camps: the traditional Pahalgam-Chandanwari route, about 43 km each way and normally walked over three to five days, or the shorter and much steeper Baltal route near Sonamarg, about 13-14 km each way, often done in one to two days. Ponies, palkis and pithoo porters are available on both tracks.
This is a high-altitude trek, not a drive-up temple, and the Shrine Board's rules are strict. Registration with the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board is compulsory and opens months ahead, and a Compulsory Health Certificate from a Board-authorised doctor, issued on or after the date the Board specifies for that year, must be produced. The Board permits only pilgrims aged 13 to 70; children under 13, anyone above 70, and women more than six weeks pregnant are not allowed to undertake the yatra. Both routes have been notified as no-flying zones in recent seasons, so helicopter service may not be available and you should confirm the current position with the Shrine Board before booking. The yatra can be suspended at short notice for weather or landslides, so keep buffer days.

Can elderly parents do the Amarnath Yatra?
Only up to age 70. The Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board does not register pilgrims above 70 years or below 13 years, and every registered pilgrim needs a Compulsory Health Certificate from a Board-authorised doctor. Even within that limit, the walk is at nearly 13,000 ft and demands genuine fitness; heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions should be discussed with your own doctor first.
Which route is easier, Pahalgam or Baltal?
Neither is easy, but they are hard in different ways. Pahalgam-Chandanwari is about 43 km each way and spread over three to five days, so the climb is gradual and gentler on the body. Baltal is about 13-14 km each way and can be done in a day or two, but it is a steep, sharp ascent with little time to acclimatise. Families with older members usually prefer the Pahalgam side.
Will we definitely see the ice lingam?
No one can promise that. The lingam is a natural ice formation that grows and melts with the season and the weather, and in several recent years it has shrunk substantially, or melted almost fully, well before the yatra ended. Early-season dates give a better chance. Access can also be suspended for weather, so keep spare days in your plan.
Can a travel agent arrange faster darshan or a special entry?
No. Darshan at the cave is managed entirely by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board and the administration, through registration slots and the queue on the day. No operator can obtain, reserve or speed up darshan. What an operator can genuinely help with is transport, base-camp stay, ponies or porters, and guidance on the registration process, which you complete in your own name.
