Thiruvanchikulam Mahadeva Temple at Kodungallur in Thrissur district is a Shiva temple where the Lord is worshipped as Mahadeva in lingam form, alongside his consort Umadevi — which is why the shrine is often called Uma Maheswara and is associated with family and marital well-being. Its chief distinction is that it is the only temple in Kerala counted among the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams, the Shiva shrines sung in the 7th-century Tamil Saiva canon Tevaram, with verses here composed by the saint Sundarar. The temple was built in the Kerala style during the Chera period, when Kodungallur (Mahodayapuram) was the Chera capital, and it later served as a family shrine of the Cochin royal house. Devotees also come for its Namaskara Mandapam with sixteen pillars, its mural paintings, and the unusually large gathering of sub-deities within the compound — commonly counted as 33, said to be the highest in Kerala.
October to March is the easiest stretch for elders — Kerala's coastal humidity eases after the monsoon and walking the temple courtyard is comfortable. The two big draws are the eight-day Shivaratri festival in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February–March) and the Brahmotsavam around May–June, when the flag is hoisted and processions fill the grounds; these days are hot, crowded and slow-moving, so choose them only if you want the festival itself rather than a quiet darshan. Avoid June to August, when heavy monsoon rain makes the coastal roads and open temple yards difficult.
The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery, roughly 27–30 km away, with taxis and buses to Kodungallur. The nearest railhead is Irinjalakuda, about 15–20 km, while Aluva and Thrissur (around 30 km and 38 km) have far more long-distance trains and are the practical choice for most pilgrims. By road, Kodungallur sits on NH-66 between Thrissur and Ernakulam — about 35 km from Ernakulam and 38 km from Thrissur — and the temple is a short drive from Kodungallur town towards Kottappuram, with the Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple close enough to combine in the same trip.
Entry is permitted to Hindus only, as at many Kerala temples. The traditional dress code applies: men wear a mundu or veshti and are expected to remove their shirt before entering the inner areas; women wear a saree, skirt or salwar kameez. There is no climb or long walk, which makes it manageable for elderly pilgrims, but you enter barefoot and the paving can get hot at midday. Why is Thiruvanchikulam called the only Paadal Petra Sthalam in Kerala?
The Paadal Petra Sthalams are the 276 Shiva temples praised in the Tevaram hymns of the Tamil Nayanmar saints. Almost all of them lie in Tamil Nadu; Thiruvanchikulam is the one in Kerala, sung by the saint Sundarar, which is why Shaiva pilgrims completing the Tevaram circuit travel here.
What is the connection with Sundarar and Cheraman Perumal?
Tradition holds that the saint Sundarar ascended to Kailasa from this temple on a white elephant sent by Shiva, and that his friend the Chera king Cheraman Perumal followed on horseback. Images of Sundarar and Cheraman Perumal are kept at the temple and are brought out on particular festival days. This is devotional tradition recorded in the Periyapuranam rather than documented history.
Is it easy to combine with the Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple?
Yes. Both are in and around Kodungallur town and are commonly visited on the same day, along with other Muziris-area sites. Allow a relaxed half-day if you are travelling with elders, and check timings for each shrine separately, since they follow their own schedules.
