Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple, about 20 km from Ernakulam, is one of the best-known Devi shrines in Kerala and is administered by the Cochin Devaswom Board. The presiding deity is Rajarajeswari, the Mother Goddess, worshipped in a different form at each part of the day — Saraswathi in the morning and Durga in the evening — with an idol of Mahavishnu sharing the same pedestal, so the sanctum is addressed as Lakshmi-Narayana. The image is not a carved idol but a self-formed laterite rock, the Rudraksha Shila. The temple has two shrines: the upper Melkavu of the Mother Goddess, and the lower Keezhkkavu of Bhadrakali beside the pond, where the evening Guruthi Pooja is performed; tradition holds that a period of worship at Keezhkkavu relieves mental affliction, and families who believe they have been healed drive a nail into the old Pala tree near the shrine — the nail-studded trunk is the temple's most-photographed feature.
October to February is the most comfortable stretch, with dry, cooler weather after the monsoon and Navaratri and Thrikkarthika falling within it. The temple's biggest day is Makam Thozhal, on the Makam star in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (mid-February to mid-March) — the darshan of the Goddess in her Makam adornment draws an enormous crowd, and elderly pilgrims who cannot stand for long in a press of people are better off choosing an ordinary day. June to September brings heavy Kerala monsoon rain.
Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery is the nearest airport, roughly 35-40 km away by road, about an hour and a half in traffic. Ernakulam Junction (South) is the nearest major railhead, about 15-20 km from the temple, with taxis and autos readily available; Ernakulam Town (North) and Tripunithura are also usable. By road the temple is off the Ernakulam-Kanjiramattom route, close to Tripunithura, and KSRTC and private buses run frequently from Ernakulam.
A traditional dress code is enforced, as at most Kerala temples: men are expected in a mundu or dhoti, customarily without a shirt (an angavastram over the shoulder is fine), and women in a saree, set-mundu, churidar or salwar kameez. Trousers, jeans, shorts and T-shirts are not permitted inside. Carry a change of clothes if you are arriving straight from the airport or station.
Planned around you, not a fixed departure. Holiday Vibez arranges pilgrimages to Chottanikkara Temple in Kochi for families, elders and temple groups travelling from Chennai, Coimbatore, Kochi and Madurai. Tell us your dates and how many are coming — we build the route around that. 100% customisable.
- Stays near the shrine — so elders aren't driven back and forth at 4am.
- Private transfers — pick-up from your door, not a meeting point.
- Meals that suit the group — including pure-veg and fasting requirements.
- Group travel — 4 people or 40, one coordinator, one itinerary.
- Someone on the phone — when you're in a queue three states from home.
Temple boards run their own darshan queues and quotas. No travel agent can sell you a special one, and agencies that promise "VIP darshan" are either misleading you or breaking the trust's rules. We help you book the official slots and we get everything else right.
Most of the people we send on yatra are over 55, or booking for parents who are. We plan shorter driving days, stays within walking distance where the shrine allows it, and we'll tell you honestly if a site involves a long climb or a trek before you pay — not after.
Why do people bring family members with mental illness to Chottanikkara?
The Keezhkkavu Bhadrakali shrine has a long-standing reputation for relieving mental disturbance and what devotees describe as possession, and families traditionally observe a fixed period of worship there, attending the evening Guruthi Pooja. Those who believe they have been cured drive a nail into the old Pala tree beside the shrine. This is a devotional tradition, not medical treatment, and it is not a substitute for a doctor's care.
What is the difference between Melkavu and Keezhkkavu?
Melkavu is the upper, main shrine of Rajarajeswari, the Mother Goddess, where the day's regular worship happens. Keezhkkavu is the lower shrine of Bhadrakali, near the temple pond, and is where the Guruthi Pooja is performed. Most pilgrims visit both; they are within the same complex and involve only a short walk, with a few steps.
Is Makam Thozhal a good day to take elderly parents?
Makam Thozhal, in February or March, is the temple's largest gathering and the crowd is very heavy for several hours. If your parents cannot stand in a long, tightly packed queue, an ordinary weekday outside festival season gives a far calmer darshan. Poojas and daily schedules change, so confirm with the temple before you travel.
