Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple in Kottayam district is dedicated to Shiva, worshipped here as Ettumanoorappan. The present structure was rebuilt in 1542 CE, and the temple counts among the major Shiva shrines of Kerala alongside Vaikom, Kaduthuruthy and Vazhappally. Its best-known possession is the Ezharaponnana — seven full-size and one half-size elephant figures carved in jackfruit wood and covered with roughly 13 kg of gold, associated by temple tradition with the Travancore ruler Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma. The other reason people come is the mural work: the Pradosha Nritham fresco of the dancing Shiva, painted near the main entrance, is counted among the finest wall paintings in India.
November to February is the easiest stretch for weather in this part of Kerala — drier and less humid than the long monsoon months. The ten-day Arattu festival falls in the Malayalam month of Kumbham, around Thiruvathira in February or March; the Ezharaponnana darshan on the eighth night, when the golden elephants are brought out around midnight, draws very heavy crowds and is difficult going for elders. If you want the murals and the shrine in relative quiet, come on an ordinary day outside the festival week.
Ettumanur railway station is the closest railhead, roughly 2 km from the temple; Kottayam, the bigger station with more long-distance trains, is about 11-12 km away. Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery is around 75-80 km north, roughly two hours by road. The temple stands right beside the MC Road at Ettumanoor town, so buses between Kottayam, Ernakulam and Pala stop close by, and taxis from Kottayam take about 25 minutes.
A traditional dress code is enforced. Men are required to remove shirts and vests before entering and to wear a mundu or dhoti; women should be in a saree, salwar kameez or similar covered traditional dress. Jeans, shorts and short skirts are not accepted. Carry a mundu with you rather than relying on finding one at the gate. Photography inside the shrine and of the mural walls is restricted — ask the temple staff before using a camera or phone.

What is the Ezharaponnana and can I see it on any day?
It is a set of eight golden elephant figures — seven full-size and one half — made of jackfruit wood plated with about 13 kg of gold. They are not on daily public view. They are brought out for darshan during the annual Arattu festival, on the eighth day around midnight and again on the tenth day. Confirm the exact dates with the temple before planning a trip around it.
How long does a visit take, and is it manageable for elderly parents?
The temple is on flat ground in the middle of Ettumanoor town with no climb or long flight of steps, so it suits elders well. An unhurried visit including the murals takes under an hour on a normal day. During the February-March festival, particularly the Ezharaponnana night, the crush is severe and standing time is long — plan that day carefully or skip it.
Can this be combined with other Shiva temples nearby?
Yes. Vaikom Mahadeva Temple is about 25 km away and Kaduthuruthy Thaliyil Mahadeva Temple sits between the two, so many pilgrims cover all three in a day from Kottayam. Some devotees traditionally attempt Vaikom, Ettumanoor and Kaduthuruthy in a single morning. Darshan timings vary by temple, so check with each before setting out.
