Attukal Bhagavathy Temple stands on the banks of the Killi river in Thiruvananthapuram, about two kilometres from the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple. The goddess here, known affectionately as Attukal Amma, is worshipped as Bhadrakali and is also identified with Kannagi, the wronged heroine of the Tamil epic Silappadikaram; tradition holds that after Madurai burned she travelled west and appeared in a dream to the head of the Mulluveettil family, asking to be consecrated at this spot. The building itself blends Kerala and Dravidian styles, its wooden and carved panels showing Kali, Shiva, Parvati and the ten avatars of Vishnu. What draws pilgrims from across India, though, is the Attukal Pongala, a mass offering cooked by women alone, which the Guinness World Records has recognised as the largest annual gathering of women anywhere.
October to February gives Thiruvananthapuram its most comfortable weather for elders, with lighter rain and less humidity. The ten-day Pongala festival falls in the Malayalam month of Kumbham, usually late February or early March, and Pongala day itself is extraordinarily crowded — hearths line the roads for several kilometres around the temple and the city effectively stops. If your family wants a quiet darshan rather than the festival, come well outside those ten days.
Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is roughly 5-6 km from the temple, and Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station about 2-3 km, both a short taxi or autorickshaw ride away. The temple sits in the Manacaud area of the city, close to East Fort, and is easily reached by road from anywhere in the city; Kollam is about 65 km north and Kanyakumari about 85 km south, so it fits comfortably into a south Kerala circuit.
Traditional Indian dress is expected, as at most Kerala temples, and reported rules differ between sources — check with the temple before you travel if you are unsure what your family should wear. During Pongala the approach roads are closed to vehicles for a wide radius and there is a great deal of standing and walking in the heat, which is worth weighing carefully if you are travelling with elders or young children. Timings and ritual schedules change; confirm with the temple before you travel.

Can men take part in the Attukal Pongala?
No. The Pongala offering itself is cooked and offered by women only — this is the defining rule of the festival. Men do attend the temple and assist with arrangements, water and firewood, but they do not prepare the pongala.
How far is Attukal temple from Padmanabhaswamy Temple?
About two kilometres, so most families visit both on the same morning. An autorickshaw takes only a few minutes, and the walk is manageable for those who are comfortable on foot.
Do we need to book anything in advance for darshan?
No. The temple board runs its own queues and no agent or operator can arrange, reserve or speed up darshan. We can arrange your travel, transfers and stay; the darshan line is the temple's alone. On Pongala day, arrive very early and expect long waits.
