Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Swamy Temple stands about 14 km south of Alappuzha town in Kerala, and enshrines Vishnu as Krishna in the Parthasarathy form — the charioteer of the Mahabharata, shown with a whip in one hand and a conch in the other. It is counted among the 108 Abhimana Kshetrams of the Vaishnava tradition and among the great Vaishnava temples of the old Travancore country, and was built by the Chembakassery ruler Devanarayanan Thampuran, dated by most accounts to the 15th century. The building itself is classic Kerala temple architecture — tiled roofs, timber, a walled compound with a long pillared corridor rather than a tall gopuram. What most pilgrims come for is the paal payasam, the milk-and-rice offering the temple has served for centuries; tradition holds that Krishna appeared here as a sage, won a wager of rice grains from the king over a game of chess, and accepted the debt in the form of payasam offered daily. The temple also sheltered the Guruvayoor idol for three years during Tipu Sultan's 1789 campaign, and is remembered as the place where Kunchan Nambiar's Ottamthullal took shape.
October to February is the easiest stretch for elders — dry, cooler and comfortable for a coastal Kerala day. The temple's own ten-day Arattu festival falls in the Malayalam month of Meenam (roughly March–April), ending on Thiruvonam day, and is the most atmospheric but also the most crowded and the hottest time of year. The Champakulam Moolam boat race, held on Moolam day in Mithunam (June–July) and historically tied to this temple's idol, draws very large crowds to the region and coincides with the monsoon.
Ambalappuzha has its own railway station (code AMPA) on the Ernakulam–Kayamkulam coastal line, roughly 1–2 km from the temple; Alappuzha station, with more long-distance trains, is about 14 km north. The temple sits close to National Highway 66 (formerly NH 47), so buses between Alappuzha and Kollam/Thiruvananthapuram stop nearby, and an auto or taxi covers the last stretch. Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery is the nearest airport, roughly 90–100 km north by road; Thiruvananthapuram airport is the alternative to the south.
A traditional Kerala dress code applies: men are expected to wear a mundu or dhoti and to remove shirts and banians before entering, and women should wear a saree, set-mundu or salwar — no shorts, skirts or sleeveless wear. Footwear is left outside. As a Travancore Devaswom Board temple, entry to the shrine follows the Board's convention of admission for those of the Hindu faith; confirm the current position with the temple office before travelling if this affects anyone in your group. Photography inside the temple is generally not permitted, and the paal payasam is a temple offering distributed by the Devaswom under its own arrangements — no agent, ours included, can obtain, reserve or hasten darshan or prasadam here.

What is the Ambalappuzha paal payasam and can I book it in advance?
It is a sweet pudding of rice, milk and sugar offered to the deity and then distributed to devotees, and it is the offering the temple is best known for. Quantities, vazhipadu bookings and counters are handled entirely by the temple's Devaswom office — ask them directly on the day or in advance by phone. No travel agent can reserve or guarantee it.
What are the darshan timings?
Kerala temples open early morning, close through the middle of the day and reopen in the evening, but exact hours shift with festival days and rituals. Please confirm timings with the temple before you travel rather than relying on a printed schedule.
Can we cover Ambalappuzha along with the Alappuzha backwaters in one day?
Yes. The temple is about 14 km from Alappuzha town and close to the highway, so most families visit early in the morning and take the boat house or houseboat later in the day. Elders find the temple itself easy — it is level ground with no climb and no long flight of steps.
