The Tarakeshwara Temple at Hangal, in Karnataka's Haveri district, enshrines Shiva in his Tarakeshwara form and is one of the finest surviving temples of the Deccan's medieval building tradition. Tradition and local records credit its origins to the Kadambas, who ruled Hangal as a regional capital, while the temple as it stands today — grey-green chloritic schist, lathe-turned pillars, a twelve-pillared Nandi hall — took its shape under the Kalyani Chalukyas around the 11th to 12th centuries. Its single most talked-about feature is the "Lotus of Hangal": an octagonal domical ceiling carved as an open lotus and carried on eight pillars, worked in stone with a delicacy usually seen in metal. The complex, which also holds a smaller Ganesha shrine with a Nagara-style tower and several inscribed hero stones, is a listed monument of the Archaeological Survey of India and remains a living place of worship.
November to February is the comfortable window — north Karnataka's plains are dry and mild then, and the carving is easiest to see and photograph in the clear winter light. Maha Shivaratri, in February or March, is the temple's biggest day and draws crowds from across Haveri and the surrounding taluks; the atmosphere is at its best but the sanctum queue is long, so elders may prefer a day either side. Avoid April and May, when daytime temperatures in this belt regularly cross 38 degrees, and expect heavy spells during the June-to-September monsoon.
The nearest airport is Hubballi (Hubli), roughly 75-80 km away, with flights from Bengaluru, Mumbai and Hyderabad. The closest convenient railhead is Haveri, about 37-40 km from Hangal on the Bengaluru-Pune main line; Hubballi Junction is the larger station if you want more train options. By road, Hangal is well served by KSRTC buses from Haveri, Hubballi, Sirsi (about 42 km) and Dharwad, and is roughly 370 km from Bengaluru via Chitradurga and Haveri. The Hangal bus stand is about a kilometre from the temple, and the last stretch is a short auto ride or an easy walk.
Hangal is a small taluk town with limited hotels and restaurants, so most travellers stay at Haveri, Hubballi or Sirsi and visit as a day trip. As with any ASI-protected temple, check the current rules on photography inside the sanctum at the entrance, and confirm darshan times with the temple before you travel.

Who built the Tarakeshwara Temple at Hangal?
The temple's beginnings are credited to the Kadambas, who held Hangal as a provincial seat, but the building visible today is largely the work of the Kalyani Chalukyas, generally dated to the 11th-12th centuries. Sources differ on the exact year of construction, so it is safest to describe it as a Kalyani Chalukya temple on older Kadamba foundations.

It is the temple's celebrated octagonal ceiling, carved from stone in the form of an open lotus and supported on eight pillars, set in the hall facing the deity. It is the feature most visitors come specifically to see, and it is best viewed in daylight.
