St Francis Church in Fort Kochi is generally held to be the oldest European-built church still standing in India. The Portuguese raised a timber chapel here in 1503 and rebuilt it in stone and masonry from 1506, and the building passed in turn to the Dutch after 1663, who kept it when they pulled down Kochi's other churches, and then to the Anglicans under British rule. Vasco da Gama died at Kochi in 1524 and was buried inside this church; his remains were taken to Portugal about fourteen years later, but the gravestone marking the original burial spot is still set in the floor and is what most visitors come to see. It is today a working parish of the Church of South India and a centrally protected monument, a plain whitewashed hall with a stepped gabled facade rather than an ornate one.
November to February is the comfortable window in Kochi — dry, less humid, and pleasant for walking the Fort Kochi heritage streets on foot. Christmas and Easter bring full congregations and special services, so the church is busy with worshippers rather than sightseers on those days. June to September is the south-west monsoon, with heavy and sustained rain that makes walking around the peninsula difficult for elders.
Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery is the nearest airport, roughly 45 km away, with taxis and buses to Fort Kochi. The nearest railheads are Ernakulam Junction (South), about 13 km, and Ernakulam Town (North), about 16 km; both are on the main line and well served. By road the church sits in the middle of Fort Kochi and is easily reached by taxi or auto from Ernakulam, and ferries also run from Ernakulam Boat Jetty, Willingdon Island and Vypin.
Two things worth knowing before you plan. First, Vasco da Gama is not buried here any more — only the empty original grave slab remains, and visitors expecting a tomb are sometimes disappointed. Second, this is an active Church of South India parish as well as a monument, so it is given over to worship during service hours, chiefly on Sunday mornings and on festival days; dress modestly and confirm visiting arrangements with the church before you travel.

Is Vasco da Gama still buried in St Francis Church, Kochi?
No. He died in Kochi in 1524 and was buried here, but his remains were moved to Portugal roughly fourteen years later and now lie at the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon. What you see in Fort Kochi is the original gravestone marking where he was first laid, which is still inside the church.
Can non-Christians visit St Francis Church?
Yes. It is a protected monument as well as a working Church of South India parish, and visitors of all faiths are welcome to walk through it. Please keep quiet, dress modestly and avoid visiting during a service. Confirm visiting arrangements with the church before you travel, as they can change.
How much time should we set aside, and what else is nearby?
The church itself is a single hall and most families spend well under an hour inside. It sits within easy walking distance of the Santa Cruz Basilica, the Chinese fishing nets and the Fort Kochi beachfront, so it is usually combined into a half-day of Fort Kochi sightseeing rather than visited alone.
