Sphatik Shila is a smooth rock on the bank of the Mandakini river in Chitrakoot, a short distance upstream of Ram Ghat and close to Janki Kund, on the Madhya Pradesh (Satna district) side of the Chitrakoot pilgrim belt. It is not a built temple of towers and gopurams but a revered stone, sheltered and worshipped, on which devotees are shown impressions venerated as the footprints of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana. Tradition holds that Rama and Sita rested here during their forest exile, and that the rock softened for their comfort — and it is here that Jayanta, son of Indra, is said to have taken the form of a crow and wounded Sita, for which Rama struck him with a blade of grass. Pilgrims come to it as one stop on the Chitrakoot circuit, walking the same riverbank the Ramayana places Rama on, rather than for a grand shrine.
October to March is the comfortable window — Chitrakoot's summers run very hot and the Mandakini bank offers little shade, while the monsoon can leave the riverside slippery. Diwali (Deepdanotsav at Ram Ghat), Ram Navami, Sharad Purnima and Makar Sankranti are the big occasions. Be warned that every Amavasya, and especially Somvati Amavasya and Diwali, brings lakhs of pilgrims to Chitrakoot for the Kamadgiri parikrama — moving between sites on those days is genuinely difficult for elders, and a quiet weekday in winter is far kinder.
Chitrakoot Airport (CWK) at Devangana is about 12 km from town, but its scheduled service has been minimal, so most travellers fly into Prayagraj (roughly 110 km, 2.5-3 hours) or Khajuraho (roughly 175 km). The usual railhead is Chitrakoot Dham Karvi (CKTD), about 10-12 km from the Ram Ghat and Janki Kund area; Satna in Madhya Pradesh is the bigger station, around 80 km by road. From Ram Ghat the site is a short taxi, auto or shared-jeep hop, and many pilgrims reach it by boat along the Mandakini or on foot from Janki Kund.
This is a riverside rock shrine, not a large temple complex — expect a short walk and a few steps down towards the Mandakini, and stone that can be wet and slippery in and after the monsoon, which matters if elders are walking. Footwear comes off before the shila. It is almost always visited together with Janki Kund and Ram Ghat, so plan them as one stretch rather than separate trips. Confirm opening arrangements locally before you travel, as small riverside shrines keep their own hours.

Is Sphatik Shila in Uttar Pradesh or Madhya Pradesh?
The Chitrakoot pilgrim area straddles the two states. Sphatik Shila, along with Janki Kund and Ram Ghat, lies on the Madhya Pradesh side, in Satna district, while the town of Karvi and the railway station are in Uttar Pradesh. In practice you cross between the two without noticing, and one trip covers both sides.
What will we actually see at Sphatik Shila?
A smooth rock by the Mandakini, kept under a small shelter, on which priests point out impressions venerated as the footprints of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana, along with marks connected to the Jayanta episode. It is a quiet, brief stop — most families spend a short while here as part of a wider Chitrakoot darshan rather than a full morning.
How much walking does the Chitrakoot circuit involve for elderly parents?
Sphatik Shila itself is easy — a short walk and a few steps from the road or the boat landing. The demanding part of Chitrakoot is the Kamadgiri parikrama, a circuit of about 5 km walked barefoot by many pilgrims; that is optional and can be skipped or shortened. Gupt Godavari involves stooping through a wet cave passage, which some elders find hard.
