Mamleshwar, also called Amareshwar, is a Shiva temple standing on the south bank of the Narmada at Omkareshwar in Khandwa district, directly across the water from the Omkareshwar temple on Mandhata island. Tradition holds that Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar are two forms of the same fourth Jyotirlinga among the twelve, and many pilgrims consider their Omkareshwar darshan complete only after they have also bowed at Mamleshwar. The stone temple complex is associated with the Paramara period (broadly 10th-11th century), and its most distinctive feature is the older carved sandstone walls and pillars, worked with figures and inscriptions, that survive around the sanctum. Unlike the island shrine, it sits on the mainland bank, so it draws pilgrims who want the Jyotirlinga darshan without crossing the river.
October to March is the comfortable stretch, with mild days and a cool breeze off the Narmada, and it suits elders best. Sawan (roughly July-August) and Mahashivratri in February-March are the great Shiva occasions here, and the whole Omkareshwar area is genuinely, punishingly crowded then, with long standing queues in heat or rain. April to June is very hot in this part of Madhya Pradesh; if you must travel then, go for the early morning.
The nearest airport is Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport, Indore, roughly 80-90 km away, about two to two and a half hours by road. The usual railhead is Khandwa Junction, about 70-77 km, and Indore Junction is a similar distance; both have taxis and buses to Omkareshwar. By road, Omkareshwar is reached off the Indore-Khandwa route and is well connected by state buses and hired cars from Indore, Ujjain and Khandwa; Mamleshwar is on the mainland south bank, a short walk or auto ride from the Omkareshwar temple side.
Mamleshwar is on the mainland bank, so it does not need the river crossing or the island climb that Omkareshwar itself involves, which makes it easier on elders and wheelchair users. There are still a few steps at the temple, and the stone floor gets very hot in summer since footwear is left outside. Timings, aarti schedules and any abhishek arrangements should be confirmed with the temple before you travel.

Is Mamleshwar a separate Jyotirlinga from Omkareshwar?
Tradition treats Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar (Amareshwar) as two forms of the same single Jyotirlinga, the fourth of the twelve. That is why most pilgrims visit both on the same day rather than choosing between them, and many hold that the darshan is complete only after Mamleshwar.
Do I need to take a boat to reach Mamleshwar?
No. Mamleshwar stands on the south bank of the Narmada on the mainland, so you can reach it on foot or by vehicle. It is the Omkareshwar temple on Mandhata island that involves crossing by bridge or boat.
How much time should we keep for Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar together?
A comfortable half day covers both if the crowd is normal, since the two shrines are close to each other. On Mahashivratri, Sawan Mondays and Kartik Purnima, plan a full day, as queues are long and darshan is regulated entirely by the temple administration.
