Gadkalika (also written Garhkalika) is an old Devi temple on the northern edge of Ujjain, near the Shipra river and the Bhartrihari caves, where the goddess is worshipped in her Kalika form — the fierce, protective aspect of Shakti rather than the gentle one. It is best known through its association with the poet Kalidasa: tradition holds that he was an unlettered man who worshipped the goddess here and received the gift of speech and learning from her, which is why students, writers, singers and parents of children sitting exams still come to this shrine specifically. The temple is said to have been renovated in the 7th century during the reign of Harshavardhana, and was rebuilt again in more recent centuries under the rulers of the erstwhile Gwalior state, so what a visitor sees today is a much-restored structure over a very old sanctum. Most pilgrims pair it with Ujjain's larger shrines — Mahakaleshwar, Harsiddhi and Kal Bhairav — as part of a single day of temple visits.
October to March is the comfortable window, when Ujjain is dry and pleasant and walking between temples is easy; April to June is genuinely harsh, often crossing 42 C by midday. Both Navratris — Chaitra (March/April) and Sharad (September/October) — are the temple's biggest occasions, with heavy crowds and long queues, and Ujjain as a whole is extremely crowded during Mahashivaratri and during Simhastha Kumbh years. If you are travelling with elders, a normal weekday morning outside festival season is far kinder.
The nearest airport is Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport, Indore, roughly 55 km away by road, about 1.5 hours. Ujjain Junction is the railhead, well connected to Indore, Bhopal, Delhi, Mumbai and Ahmedabad, and the temple is about 3-4 km from the station on the northern side of the city — an easy auto or taxi ride. By road, Indore is about 55 km and Bhopal about 190 km, both on good highways with regular buses and taxis.
The approach lane is narrow and vehicles usually stop a short distance from the temple, so expect a few minutes of walking and a small flight of steps at the entrance — worth planning for if someone in the group has difficulty walking. Modest dress is expected, footwear is left outside, and photography inside the sanctum is generally not allowed. Puja and aarti timings can change on festival days, so confirm with the temple before you travel.

Is Gadkalika Temple a Shakti Peetha?
You will see it described that way on many websites, but sources disagree — some list the Ujjain Shakti Peetha as Harsiddhi rather than Gadkalika. What is consistent across accounts is that Gadkalika is an ancient and important Devi shrine of the Kalika form, and pilgrims in Ujjain visit both temples. If the peetha status matters to your yatra, ask at the temple office in Ujjain.
Why do students and artists visit this temple?
Because of the Kalidasa tradition. The poet is believed to have worshipped the goddess here and received learning and eloquence through her grace, so families bring children before examinations, and singers, writers and performers come to seek her blessing before beginning new work.
Can it be combined with Mahakaleshwar in the same day?
Yes. Gadkalika is only a few kilometres from the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, and most Ujjain circuits cover Mahakaleshwar, Harsiddhi, Kal Bhairav, Gadkalika and the Ram Ghat on the Shipra in one day. Allow extra time on festival days, since queues at Mahakaleshwar are managed entirely by the temple committee and can be long.
