Ram Ghat is the best known of the bathing ghats on the Shipra river in Ujjain, and the oldest stretch of the riverfront still in daily ritual use. Tradition holds that Rama performed the pind daan rites for his father here during his exile, which is how the ghat is said to have taken its name. Pilgrims come to bathe in the Shipra, to perform shraddha and pind daan for ancestors, and to sit on the stone steps for the evening Shipra aarti, when priests take up lamps, bells and conches at the water's edge. It is also the ceremonial heart of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, the great bathing fair Ujjain hosts once every twelve years, and it sits within walking distance of the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in the old city.
October to March is the comfortable window, when Ujjain is cool enough to sit through the sunset aarti and the river bathing is pleasant for elders. Kartik Purnima (November) brings the floating of lamps on the Shipra and is beautiful but heavily crowded, as is Mahashivratri, when bathers move from the ghat to Mahakaleshwar. The Simhastha Kumbh, next due in 2028, draws enormous numbers, and the royal bathing days in particular are punishingly crowded — families with elderly members are better off on ordinary days.
The nearest airport is Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport at Indore, about 55 km from Ujjain, with taxis and buses running the route in roughly one and a half to two hours. Ujjain Junction is the railhead and is only about 3 to 4 km from the ghat, an easy auto or e-rickshaw ride. By road Ujjain is well connected to Indore, Bhopal (about 190 km) and Dewas; the last stretch to Ram Ghat runs through narrow old-city lanes, so vehicles are usually parked a short walk away.
Ram Ghat is an open riverfront with flights of stone steps down to the water, and the lower steps get wet and slippery. Elderly pilgrims should have someone with them while bathing, and during the monsoon the Shipra can run high and bathing may be restricted. Aarti timing shifts with the season and with the river's level — confirm locally before you travel.

Is there an entry fee or ticket for the Shipra aarti at Ram Ghat?
Ram Ghat is a public riverfront, not a ticketed enclosure, and pilgrims sit on the open steps for the evening aarti. Timings change with the season, so confirm with the ghat priests or your hotel on the day.
How far is Ram Ghat from the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple?
The two are close together in the old city and many pilgrims walk between them or take a short auto ride. It is common to bathe at Ram Ghat first and then go for darshan at Mahakaleshwar. Darshan queues at Mahakaleshwar are run entirely by the temple committee and no one outside it can arrange or shorten them.
