Shravanabelagola is one of the oldest and most important Jain pilgrimage centres in India, built around two rocky hills — Vindhyagiri and Chandragiri — in Hassan district, Karnataka. On top of Vindhyagiri stands the Gommateshwara statue of Bahubali, about 57 feet high and carved from a single block of granite, commissioned around 981 CE by Chavundaraya, a minister and general of the Western Ganga dynasty. Bahubali is shown standing in unmoving meditation, with creepers carved climbing his legs and arms to show how long he stood, and the image is worshipped as a symbol of renunciation and non-violence. The smaller hill, Chandragiri, carries old bastis and, by tradition, is associated with the Mauryan emperor Chandragupta, who is said to have ended his life here as a Jain ascetic; the site as a whole holds over 800 inscriptions dating from roughly the 6th century onward.
October to February is the comfortable window — the Deccan plateau is dry and cool, and the barefoot climb up the rock face is bearable. March to May is the hardest time to visit, because the bare granite steps get very hot underfoot by mid-morning. The great event here is the Mahamastakabhisheka, the head-anointing ceremony held only once in about twelve years — the last was in February 2018 and the next is expected around 2030 — and in those years the town is extremely crowded, with long waits and heavy traffic; ordinary years are calm by comparison.
Shravanabelagola is about 51 km by road from Hassan town, roughly 145-160 km from Bengaluru and about 80 km from Mysuru, lying around 12 km off the Bengaluru-Mangaluru highway near Channarayapatna. It has its own small railway station on the Hassan-Bengaluru line, but train services here are limited, so most pilgrims travel by road from Hassan, Mysuru or Bengaluru. The nearest airports are Mysuru (Mandakalli), roughly 80 km away with few flights, and Kempegowda International Airport at Bengaluru, about 180 km away, which is the practical arrival point for most visitors.
The statue is reached only on foot: a long flight of over 600 rock-cut steps up Vindhyagiri hill, climbed barefoot as at all Jain sites here — there is no road, lift or ropeway to the top. Elders and anyone with heart, knee or blood-pressure trouble should plan on the doli (palanquin chair carried by four bearers) available at the base, arranged directly with the bearers. Carry socks in the hot months, since the exposed rock heats up quickly, and start early in the day. Confirm darshan and abhisheka arrangements with the temple management before you travel.

How many steps are there to the Gommateshwara statue, and can elderly people manage it?
There is a single stone stairway of over 600 steps cut into the rock of Vindhyagiri hill, and it is steep in stretches. Many older pilgrims do climb it slowly with rest breaks, but if knees, heart or breathing are a concern, the doli — a chair carried by four bearers — is the sensible choice and is available at the foot of the hill for a negotiated fee. Footwear must be left at the base; the climb is done barefoot.
When is the next Mahamastakabhisheka at Shravanabelagola?
The Mahamastakabhisheka is held roughly once every twelve years. The most recent one was in February 2018, and the next is expected around 2030. Exact dates are announced by the Jain math and the state government closer to the time, so confirm with the temple management rather than relying on any published date.
Are non-Jains allowed to visit, and is photography permitted?
Yes, Shravanabelagola is open to visitors of all faiths, and people of every background climb the hill. General photography of the statue and the hill is normally allowed, but rules can differ inside individual bastis and during ceremonies, so watch for signs and follow the instructions of the temple staff on the day.
How much time should we keep for the visit?
Most families take about half a day. The climb up Vindhyagiri and time at the statue usually takes two to three hours at an unhurried pace, and the Chandragiri hill with its cluster of older bastis is a shorter, gentler climb worth another hour if energy allows.
