Shri Shantadurga Temple at Kavlem, near Ponda, is dedicated to Shantadurga — Durga in her peace-making form. Tradition holds that when Vishnu and Shiva were locked in conflict, the Goddess stood between them and settled it, which is why her image is shown with Vishnu on one side and Shiva on the other. She is the kuladevi (family deity) of a large number of Gaud Saraswat Brahmin families, and households from Goa, coastal Karnataka and Maharashtra return here for name-giving, weddings and annual family vows. The original shrine at Quelossim was destroyed in 1566 during Portuguese rule and the deity was moved inland to Kavlem; the present temple was built in the early 18th century under Maratha patronage, and its Indo-Portuguese character — pyramidal shikharas, a dome, Roman-arched and stained-glass windows, and a tall deepstambha lamp tower in the forecourt — is its most recognisable feature.
November to February is the easiest stretch — dry, cooler and comfortable for elders, since Goa's June-to-September monsoon is heavy. The temple's biggest day is the annual Zatra (Jatrotsav) on Magh Shuddha Panchami, usually falling in January or February, when the deity is taken out in a palanquin and chariot procession; it draws very large crowds and the village road and parking fill up completely, so families with elderly members may prefer a normal weekday instead. Navaratri is the other busy period. Festival dates shift with the Hindu calendar each year, so confirm with the temple before you travel.
The temple is in Kavlem village, a short drive of about 4-5 km from Ponda town and roughly 30 km from Panaji. Goa's Dabolim airport (GOI) is about 30 km away and the newer Manohar International airport at Mopa (GOX) in North Goa is roughly 50 km. For trains, Karmali station near Old Goa is about 20 km away and Madgaon (Margao) junction, which has far more long-distance services, is about 25-30 km. Ponda is well connected by state buses and the last leg is an easy taxi or auto ride; most Goa temple circuits combine it with the nearby Mangeshi and Mahalasa temples.

Is Shantadurga Temple difficult for elderly visitors?
No. The temple sits at the foot of a hill in Kavlem village and vehicles come right up to it, so there is no climb or trek involved. There are a few steps at the entrance and into the sabhamandap, and the main hall is spacious and level, so a slow walk is all that is needed.
What is the Zatra at Shantadurga Temple and when does it happen?
The Zatra is the temple's annual festival, held on Magh Shuddha Panchami, which usually falls in January or February. The Goddess is carried in a palanquin and a chariot procession is taken out. It is one of the largest temple gatherings in Goa and is extremely crowded, so plan travel and stay well in advance, and confirm the exact date with the temple as it changes every year.
Can we visit Mangeshi and Mahalasa temples on the same trip?
Yes. Shri Mangesh Temple at Mangeshi and Shri Mahalasa Narayani at Mardol are both within a few kilometres of Kavlem on the Ponda temple belt, and most families cover all three in a single half-day by car. Check each temple's own timings before setting out, as they differ.
